The government doesn't like our Idea of extraterrestrial theories. So they might put out info that is easily disprovable, so, how can I distinguish between the 2?

You can't.

I think it's just a case of reading as many, varied books as you can, and just making your own mind up using the information you've got.

As far as I'm concerned, you can take it as red the Government is lying to you, whatever country you live in.
