The tsunami warning associated with this earthquake has already been called off. Once the sun rises in the area damage assessments will begin.

New Zealand has some beautiful high mountains. I am sure they can quickly make it to most of these for evacuation were this the case couldn't they?

Plus I do think that the infrastructure and housing there is just a bit sturdier seeing as they are not that poor of a nation. Course that doesn't really matter a flood is a flood and people should evacuate for safety anyways.

My prayers were answered......

No Tsunami, no casualties.......

Oh! and I wholeheartedly agree Dyepes, New Zealand is a beautiful place, and the people are great (first hand experience). I have often said that if I had to move anywhere else in the world, New Zealand would be it. Tonga second.

As expected, there have been numerous "aftershocks" near the epicenter of the Tona earthquake:

A number of aftershocks have shaken the Pacific island nation of Tonga, following a major earthquake.

The largest of the shocks on Friday measured 6.0, compared to the 7.9 recorded in Thursday's undersea quake.
