ELEANOR HALL: Queensland National Party Senator Barnaby Joyce says Australia should exploit Antarctica's mineral resources before another country gets in first.

The outspoken politician formed his view during a month-long visit to the southern continent as part of the Federal Parliament's External Territories Committee, as Karen Barlow reports.

The only resources that should be taken from antarctica is freshwater. I'd rather not see the continent's minerals tampered with. Not until I become rich enough to extract them myself.
