This stinks cover up all the way BACK to Iraq. Defence minister's with ever changing stories, Wrong bodie shipped to wrongs country's and the victims family crying "COVER UP!!".

The Defence Minister Brendan Nelson first claimed:

"that Private Kovco was cleaning his weapon when it fired"

and now

" Private Kovco was not even holding his weapon. The pistol was "near him in his vicinity"

that's a big discrepencie IMHO

Judy Kovco:

"I want the truth and it's not coming out and they will do one big cover-up because they want more boys to go over there and they don't want Australia's perfect record of no boys being killed in battle - of any boys being killed in battle. It doesn't take a lot to work out what's going down here."

I find it exetremly hard to believe that at specialist with Australia's 3RAR unit would point a loaded pistol at his head while cleaning the weapon, only to have the weapon discharge killing himself. More to come

Sydney Morning Herald:

Mystery of Private Kovco's pistol

No cover up on Kovco: PM

Furious mother accuses army of cover-up on shooting

More to come

Maybe he was joking around when he did it? Oddly enough, it happens quite often. Just because they have military training and experience does not make them exempt from stupidity.

apparently he was a highly trained sniper, and his "weapon" has three failsafe's to prevent accidental discharge, that is what was being reported this morning anyway.

i think, he may have had a run in with annother soldier who had gone "troppo", who in turn has shot him.

and i think it is an absolute disgrace that the government didnt act immediatly by sending a RAAF aircraft to pick his body up when they found out it was the wrong body, instead they sent the people who made the mistake in the first place.

This is tragic.

April 28, 2006

PRIVATE Jake Kovco was in his room alone and had just opened an email from his wife when he fatally shot himself in the temple with his own pistol, according to new reports which contradict the government's claims.

Pte Kovco, 25, a member of an Australian army security detachment in Baghdad, died when he was accidentally shot with his own Browning 9mm pistol last Friday night.
The Defence Department and the federal government initially said Pte Kovco was in a room with two other soldiers at the time of his death.

But a source close to troops in Baghdad said Pte Kovco's two mates were in the next room and discovered him after the shot went off, contradicting that information, News Ltd newspapers reported today.

Troops also revealed the father-of-two had been under enormous pressure and had opened an email from his wife Shelley just before he died from the single bullet wound to the temple from his own pistol, News Ltd said. [url=http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,18965761-29277,00.html]news.com.au]

Could this death have been due to stress?

Two things strike me as odd...
1. The government are stating it was a "mishap".
2. He died from a single shot to the temple.

What did the email say?

Further,

Some reports suggested his death occurred shortly after he received an email from his wife.

"It is utter rubbish," his mother said after arriving home at Briagolong, in Gippsland, early yesterday afternoon.

The claim that Private Kovco was alone when he died was made by soldiers stationed in Iraq who believe the cause of his death had been covered up.

Another theory suggested he died when his laptop computer fell on his pistol, causing it to fire...continues Mother denies suicide claim.

There is no way that a Browning HP can be 'accidently discharged. The only way to fire it is by cocking the hammer and pulling the trigger. It probably has more inbuilt safety features than any other pistol made.

1).It has a magazine disconnecter which stops it from being fired when the magazine is removed and a round has inadvertently been left in the chamber.

2).There is another disconneter which stops it from being discharged unless the breech is properlly locked ('in battery').

3). Inertia firing pin; the firing pin is shorter than its housing so that the hammer may rest on the pin but a blow on the hammer will not transfer to the primer of a chambered round.

4). Conventional hand applied safety catch.

These features pretty much rule out 'accidental' discharge.
