Eye infections linked to lens solution

Bausch & Lomb Inc. has halted sales of ReNu with MoistureLoc, which was linked to Fusarium infections in the United States and at least three other countries.

The company said Hong Kong health authorities notified it of eye infections in users of the contact-lens solution in November 2005, several months before the company stopped selling the product there, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Hong Kong officials notified the company they interviewed 62 patients, and 25 said they had used a ReNu solution.

ReNu is made for Singapore and Hong Kong in the same Greenville, S.C., plant that makes it for the United States. Bausch & Lomb stopped selling the solution in the United States earlier this month, and then urged stores to remove it from their shelves after many large retailers had already taken that action on their own.
