Cyclones tracked to source
SCIENTISTS say they have cracked the secret of the cyclones that sweep across northern Australia every year - a breakthrough that will help predict the potentially devastating storms.
The cause of the tropical storm season lies not in the tropics but thousands of kilometres towards Antarctica, in the southwest of the Indian Ocean, the researchers found.
A persistent extratropical cyclone - a deep low pressure system outside the tropics - was the most likely cause, said Noel Davidson, of the Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre in Melbourne.
