After three separate groups of people sighted what they believed to be a ghost belowdecks on tours of the Charles W. Morgan, a 165-year-old whaling ship, paranormal researchers have been called in to investigate. Their initial findings lead them to believe there is a good chancce paranormal activity of some sort is taking place aboard the ship. They are planning to return with the necessary equipment to do a more detailed study.

MYSTIC, Conn. - Specialists in paranormal research are investigating whether a historic whaling ship might be home to the ghost of a long-ago seafarer.

A five-member team from the Rhode Island Paranormal Research group visited Mystic Seaport on Friday night to spend time on the Charles W. Morgan, a wooden whaling ship where several visitors have reported seeing the apparition.

The 165-year-old craft made 37 ocean voyages in search of whales during the 60 years it was in use. About 1,000 men worked on the Morgan over those decades.

The Rhode Island Paranormal Research Group became interested in the Morgan after receiving reports from three different groups of people about the apparition.

The visitors said that while touring the ship last summer, they saw a man in what appeared to be 19th-century clothing working below deck. They said the man, who had a pipe in his mouth, nodded at them but did not speak.

When they went returned to the main deck and asked a museum interpreter what the man was doing, they were told that no one was down below and that no one was assigned to be on the boat that day.

He said that he also received about 40 other reports of possible paranormal activity before those groups related their experiences.

Shiver me timbers, laddie!

Is there really a ghost aboard the Charles W. Morgan? Or is the Historical Society just trying to generate buzz ahead of a planned $3.5 million restoration next year?

Thanks asala.

I found this story intriguing, and I hope there is more to it than hype. I'll keep an eye out for updates on the paranormal research team findings.

This is typical of the book I just read about ghosts throughout the US that were found in historical landmarks, fields of battle and old hotels with a history into the ole west days. The memory of these sighted ghosts starts when a livng person sees another living person and those short 'movie memories' are handed down mind to mind for generations and kept existent by repeated sightings. They are probably initiated by people who wonder what it must have been like back then being in a locale with all that flavor, and these people have an imagination that allows for the telepathic sharing of ideas.

I can remember hearing about a labourer working in a cellar in York (UK), fixing a gas pipe or something. He turned round and saw a legion of romans marching through the cellar, but they were all knee high. On reporting his find an archeologist checked out the seller and found an old roman road a foot or so under the cellar floor.. makes you wonder!

I know it has nothing to do with this thread but still an interesting story

I disagree Knights. Memories that living people have in a certain area seem to stay in that area.

Here is another story that is much like the whaling ship story Icarus related.

Sleeping with the Ghosts at Fort Mifflin

Historic Fort Mifflin is famous for being the "Fort that saved America"
during the revolutionary war but it is also famous for being one of the
most haunted places in the country. The fort is the home of many spirits
including the screaming lady, the faceless soldier and the unknown tour
guide just to mention a few of the more famous spirits.

On every Saturday night in September and October 2006, Ft Mifflin will
host a sleeping with the ghosts event. You will get the background on
the haunted locations in the fort and receive some basic instruction on
ghost hunting presented by South Jersey Ghost Research. After that
you'll be free to wander the fort all night long and ghost hunt, sleep
in a haunted building and get breakfast in the morning.

If you are interested in getting more information about reservations and
costs please email Lorraine Irby at Fort Mifflin:

Looks like this thread may be haunted. When I checked in with My ATS this morning, it showed a last post to this thread by shortmanx5, but when I clicked on the double red arrow to take me to the last post, the thread opened at the top of the page.

There is no post from a shortmanx5. Was it deleted by Mods for content or something? This is a first for me.

Spooky.

Paranormal detectives have determined there is a "presence" aboard the Charles W. Morgan, leaving a "signature", in the form of an electro-magnetic field.
