A laser gun that can destroy Objects

Topic started on 21-4-2006 @ 09:14 AM by 1337nessCas

I have seen on some sites ( i dont remember where *) that the army have laser guns that can destroy bombs that are flying to them..

- So the aim the laser gun at the target and then it get heated and then its exploded or melted..
Is this really a Army weapon? Maybe its was just a hoax..

If you can tell me if its a hoax , could be fine

Its not a hoax at all, and if you do a search for laser weapons / THEAL or such like you'll get loads of threads and piccies to have a good look at - The techs very real, but still a bit big to use as a mobile system at the minute.

No not yet or are you thinking of the Boeing test bed for the airborne laser system?? THEAL is land based, and very very good at rapid interception of incoming mortars and artillery rounds, which is why Israels stumped up alot of cash to get it developed!

There is in fact an air mounted THEL.

THEL is nose mounted on a 747-400 specifically modified by NASA for this situation.

It hasn't flown yet to my knowledge. It's called the ABL (Airborne Laser). Do a quick search on the Northrop Grumman main site for ABL and they'll come up with some information, so will Lockheed if you do it on their site too. Most of the major contractors work on it.

Will there be ship mounted versions of this? Ships should be big enough to house all the equipment...
