Amid a flurry of accusations of racism and suchlike against Americans protesting illegal Mexican immigrants comes an eye-opening story: illegal immigrants from other nations living in Mexico are being routinely hunted down, subjected to sexual humiliation, and even killed.

www.examiner.com
While migrants in the United States have held huge demonstrations in recent weeks, the hundreds of thousands of undocumented Central Americans in Mexico suffer mostly in silence.

And though Mexico demands humane treatment for its citizens who migrate to the U.S., regardless of their legal status, Mexico provides few protections for migrants on its own soil. The issue simply isn't on the country's political agenda, perhaps because migrants make up only 0.5 percent of the population, or about 500,000 people - compared with 12 percent in the United States.

The level of brutality Central American migrants face in Mexico was apparent Monday, when police conducting a raid for undocumented migrants near a rail yard outside Mexico City shot to death a local man, apparently because his dark skin and work clothes made officers think he was a migrant.

You know, for some reason this doesn't surprise me. There seems to have been a recent upwelling of opinion on ATS that would seek to demonize Americans for their treatment of illegal Mexican immigrants, but in the light of this article it is clear that Mexico's human rights policies are perhaps in greater need of scrutiny than our own.

Where is the oversight here? Who is being so lax at their duties that Mexican police officers are free to rob, rape, and kill illegal immigrants with such impunity? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

And why is America still the bad guy?

This is precisely the sort of thing that americans should be watchful for. The US DOESN'T have a real immigration problem, the immigrants are effectively assimilated into the american mainstream, and there isn't much violence from either side. People in the US should be glad about this, and not push either group into more extreme positions.

because america is always the bad guy...didnt you get the memo? nobody cares about the facts when it comes to illegals. they dont care that central american illegals in mexico are treated about the same as jews were by the nazis, and yet mexico demands that we treat it's citizens that are in the US illegally as well as humanly possible.

that wouldnt fit into their american bashing campaign.

Violence may not be widespread with the current level of protests, but it does happen. Here in Kansas, a small rally of an estimated 1000 people turned into a small riot. Some attacked passerby's who disapproved of the illegal presence. They were promptly arrested and the crowd broken up fairly quickly, but what happens when this sort of mob mentality takes over a protest of half a million?

All it takes is one large rally turned riot to start a chain reaction. I'm waiting to see what happens on May 1st in LA. Might be interesting.

Yeah, were always the bad intolerant one. Lets see here, Germans can fight Turks, Russia can fight Chechnya, Indians can tell you the Pakistanis are the scum of the earth, Blacks can hate whites (worldwide) North Korea can hate Japan, Iran can call for the total destruction of Israel, Mexico can persecute immigrants, but let the US tell anyone of those countries that vow to completely destroy another that we are going to hold them to a treaty they signed keeping them from being able to make good on their genocidal promises and we are the bad guy.

I think it is kind of a compliment. Kinda like how McDonalds, realizing that it is the best, has too much class knock Burger King but Burger King can flame McDonalds all it wants.

You know, how the French calling us pigs is OK and just part of their little personalities but US saying "no Iran, you are not allowed to have nukes because you agreed not to and you keep threatening genocide for Israel" makes us the scourge of the Earth.

We ARE better in many ways (and worse in a few, I know) so the rest of the world can hate us and hold us to a higher standard so far as I am concerned.

Indeed, Mexico has a much more serious immigration situation than the US. They have the camps we're currently building (with the expectation of having to use them I suppose...), and they're terrible places.

America can learn a valuable lesson from Mexico in this regard.

Lets also keep in mind that mexico is a corrupt quasi-dictatorship that for nearly the whole of the past generation had a single party of politicians running it. Not exactly the standards the US should be aspiring too.
