Just watching Nova about global dimming.
Seems David Travis has a theory that the cause of global dimming, may actually be saving us for "now" from the accelerated effected of global warming. Global dimming is said to actually be cooling us down.

The idea behind global dimming is that pollution – particles in the air – are blocking sunlight and causing cooling. The documentary, originally produced for the British Broadcasting Company’s well-regarded “Horizons” specials, points out that there are scientists who believe that global warming may be slowed by global dimming.

“It is possible that the solar dimming resulting from buildup of particulate pollutants has partially offset the rate of warming attributed to greenhouse gas increases,” Travis said. “This might lead some to speculate that this is a ‘good’ thing but clearly it’s never a good idea to try and reduce one problem through creation of a new one. The numerous respiratory health risks from buildup of particulate pollutants alone justify the need to deal with this problem as soon as possible.”

Without global dimming though, we would have notice the effects of global warming alot sooner.

This was a great show.

It is indeed a very interesting topic that has gotten more attention recently. Humans pollutants as a temporary shield rely ironic. Though you cant just relate that and global warming. The suns intensities, physics, chemistry all these are needed to begin to understand global warming. That could be why there are so many people saying so many things.

Too bad the particulates which cause this dimming are also extremely toxic to inhale.

so is ozone

the particles that are talking about are in the upper atmosphere, good luck breathing that in.

The Nova episode was very enlightening. Its ironic that the very pollution made by humans are actually helping to decrease the effect of global warming.

Strange that the Nova episode was the first I've heard of global dimming. It seems the theory is non-existent in the mainstream media..

check out the bbc documentary on global dimming...came out last fall.
they have a pretty dire outlook for us as a planet, 25 years to mend what we started. if i remember correctly, they stated emissions contributing to global dimming were gradually being reduced (catalytic convertors, scrubbers in plants etc. ), while co2 emissions were still increasing dramatically.
did the nova episode show any similar data or state any possible future scenarios as a result of global dimming?
