An explosion occurred on an offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico 45 miles southeast of New Orleans, injuring 6 construction workers. They were reportedly in process of salvaging this platform after it was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The U.S. Coast Guard airlifted them to local hospitals along the Gulf Coast.

Coast Guard aircrews airlifted six injured construction workers to local hospitals along the Gulf Coast today after an explosion occurred on an offshore platform they were working on approximately 45 miles southeast of New Orleans in Breton Sound Block 1.

Aircrews from Air Station New Orleans airlifted one critically injured patient to East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, La. Two injured construction workers were airlifted to Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Miss., and three were airlifted to Biloxi Regional Medical Center in Biloxi, Miss.

The construction workers were reportedly salvaging the platform after it was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The incident is currently under investigation.

They say this incident is under investigation. I wonder what happened, what caused the explosion and how damaged the platform is. Anyone got any more details about this?

Was this an offshore oil platform, by chance? If so, there is your explanation. All incidents of this nature should be investigated but they shouldn't be immediately labeled as a conspiracy or cover-up.

The story says it is

Because it is an offshore rig, why does that give an easy explanation?

The possibility of a conspiracy exists as to why it blew up? Was there maybe some other motive for getting rid of it? IE insurance? Hence the possible conspiracy/cover up theories.

Okay, you're right. There are plenty of other reasons why an explosion would happen on an offshore rig, regardless of whether or not it carried oil. Honestly though, it was probably something benign...like a guy was smoking and accidentally dropped the still-burning butt in a gas can. Less intelligent things have happened, after all.

Well, the article says that the crew was fixing a platform that was messed up by Katrina.
