Use the Military gaurd and reserves to patrol the U.S. Mexican border

Instead of a super costly barrier wall to keep out illegals, why not start out with the military reserves and national gaurd patroling the southern U.S. border. not to shoot people, but to randomly police it. they do something like two weeks out of the year, right. why not make border patroling one of the duties the military does. the coast gaurd patrols our coasts. why not have the army and marines patrol our southern front. It might help keep the giant on slaught of illegals down for a while untill the government can figure out what else to do.
