Regarding UAV's, my take:
UAV's are definitely the way things are going for both recon and attack aircraft.
Right now, there seems no stopping the proliferation of UAVs, fuelled by their runaway success in the Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraqi conflicts.
The obvious attraction of UAVs is that they don't put pilots' lives at risk. They are now the norm for many reconnaissance missions - and are being
used at an ever increasing rate for attack missions.
It is also now unclassified information - albeit obscure, that DARPA is researching the use of nuclear powered UAV's that can patrol the skies not
for hours or days, but for months on end.
Nuclear powered UAV's?
How: Military funded research has found that by shining X-rays onto certain types of hafnium they could get it to release 60 times as much energy as
they put in.
DARPA has since been looking at ways in which this form of quantum nucleonics could be used for propulsion.
One moral question that arises from such a propulsion method is of course; should the enemy shoot down such a craft is he in effect detonating a
"dirty bomb" in his own backyard?
At any rate, moral issues notwithstanding - - to have UAV's constantly flying over a region would amount to a new form of military intimidation,
especially if they were armed to their robotic teeth.
just a thought...
