The story picks up after the events of Infinite Crisis. DC's primary superheroes Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are nowhere to be found. Several heroes, including The Question, Renee Montoya, Elongated Man, Booster Gold, Black Adam, and Steel, take to the task of picking up after them. Early in the story, Booster Gold has taken on corporate sponsors, the Question has taken Gotham City under his protection, Black Adam has decided to become an ambassador of justice to the world, and the Elongated Man is so distraught over his wife's death that he is about to commit suicide. The story focuses on what it takes to be a hero in the DC Universe.
Following the events of the limited series crossover Infinite Crisis, every DC comic series jumps ahead in-story by one year. The events of the missing year are depicted in real-time in the weekly comic book series 52. The One Year Later event started in March 2006, during the publishing of Infinite Crisis and before the first issue of 52.
