ATSNN policy on picture posting?

Topic started on 11-4-2006 @ 11:46 AM by Regenmacher

Is there a rule governing what the type of images can be posted in ATSNN?

Examples:

^ Please don't post those sorts of images.

As you have hopefully noticed, ATSNN is a place of higher discussion standards, that goes for language, discussion and images.

Images like that serve to distract or trivialize and are best left on other parts of the board.

I think of ATSNN as a serious, credible news source. I wouldn't see those pictures on CNN or MSNBC (although they're much less credible than they once were, but that's another subject).

Any jokes or photoshopped pics or political mud-slinging doesn't belong on ATSNN at all, in my opinion. They devalue it.

Those are pretty funny, though.

The first two pictures are inappropriate for ATSNN no doubt, but why the third one?

Ben Franklin rocked!!!

They would be better in BTS I think..
Just think, if you saw stuff like that on CNN/BBC it would quickly devolve into the quality you would expect from a channel like Fox or Nickelodeon..

Still - they are highly amusing! I spend quite a bit of time browsing sites with plenty of stuff like that, here's a good one:

Ads on ATSNN

Okay I see how it works....no posting distracting or trivializing images only applies to the "members" on ATSNN

Thanks for the link Agentsmith, looks like a good outlet for submitting political satire.

No, it applies to ATSNN. That is what you asked about, isn't it?

Regenmacher,

You forgot the "Hit Bush and win a free IPod"

I think they are hillarious, and should be posted anyplace but ATSNN.

You make my day with your posts!

Isn't the old saying; "A picture speaks a thousand words"?

These images are not offencive when compared to a post of the same nature. However, do pictures have much of a place on any discussion based forum? In the mass media, where an image can be used while people talk over it this isn't really the case.

I'd much rather people identify a problem, explain the problem and then post a solution to it. However, I doubt that'll ever happen...

Guess I should of clarified that I was pointing out the double standard.

If I purchase space for a banner ad through tribal fusion or adtm, it's acceptable to have distracting and trivial images on ATSNN. A member who likes to illustrate his points with on topic images within the confines of the ATSNN replies, counts naught.

ATS NN ranking continue to slide further
Traffic Rank for atsnn.com = down 50,673
Reach for atsnn.com = down 27%
Page Views for atsnn.com - down 24%

Status quo is driving people away.

You can also go start your own site and do whatever you want! GET BUSY!

In the mean time, if you want to be part of this community please abide by the TAC and the individual forum standards.

Not to mention, comparing our content, which we control, to the adverts, which we don't control is just pain silly.

I guess so. And I'm still not sure what point you're trying to get across. I thought you were asking what kind of pictures are admissable in ATSNN stories, but no, it turns out that was just a ploy to make some kind of point about double standards (that really didn't play out), then it morphed into a set of statistics of ATSNN viewership...

If I purchase space for a banner ad through tribal fusion or adtm, it's acceptable to have distracting and trivial images on ATSNN.

If you purchased space, why then I'm sure you'd be allowed to put whatever images you liked there. That only seems right to me. If you paid for it. But you didn't purchase anything, did you?

A member who likes to illustrate his points with on topic images within the confines of the ATSNN replies, counts naught.

It's not that the member doesn't count, it's that there are guidelines to follow for every member who posts on ATS. Am I missing something?

If I want to post pornography here on ATS but they won't let me, does that mean the members don't count? No.
Does that mean that they have rules that every member follows? Yes.

ranking continue to slide further

And you think that's because silly pictures aren't allowed?

ATSNN is what it is. Many people appreciate it and consider it one of their best news sources. It's not like a TV show whose ratings drop means they have to cancel it because they're not making enough money.

If you don't like the way ATSNN is run, maybe you shouldn't post on there or read the stories.

And there are almost 100 forums on this board (that you don't pay to use) that would be happy to accept your silly pictures. And you're complaining because of the ONE that you can't post them in??? Do you realize how that sounds?

Uh oh, drama event in progress!

Renegmacher, don't make posts like this. You're making yourself look foolish. Posting little cartoonish graphics with thought balloons is NOT political discourse. It inhibits any discourse.

It's obvious you didn't like getting couselled about your images, but why create drama by a thread like this? It's not the kind of attention you want because this is a private board. If the owners want to say what kind of pictures you can post, then it is in their discretion to do so. So advertisers make up dumb ads? What is your point, exactly? Advertisers keep ATS free, get it? Most advertising is stupid, including the expensive stuff on TV.

It is very reasonable to assume (and I agree with this position) that pictures like you referenced are indicative of the type of forum which is beneath ATS, and I would also say that ATS members expect better content in user posts than monkey-images of George Bush Jr. Also, your point about ATSNN is meaningless because surely those stats vary from month to month.

I have to say that when I first saw that Dubya-monkey picture, I was irritated, not because I sympathize with Dubya (I do not) but because it is far too political, and political provocation prevents discussion.

And by the way, if you do take Springer's advice, you will surely learn whole new ways in which message boards can be ruined by even just a few users who don't understand the meaning of the word, guest. Good luck!

No Benevolent Heretic, it was no ploy. I wanted more clarification and raised the baseline to see what the standards and rules were, since I didn't find any in regards to political satire being posted on ATSNN. I have designed many commericial ads and I won't post anymore satirical images on ATSNN, now that I see it is forbidden.

Smallpeeps I can be foolish and my ego is just a tool....

Well drat.

Regenmacher - you are a darn good artist. Thank you for sharing your work. As I have learned by unhappy experience, real creativity is not particularly welcome here - unless it comes in a clearly marked box, without ambiguity and wartfree. Has something to do with New Age PC I think.

The world has changed. Even 15 years ago art was not just cool, it was understood to add depth and dimension and to help open the doors of the mind. Now, it is politically incorrect, and many cretins do indeed regard the labors of liberty as nothing more than a goddamned piece of paper.

IMO - your work adds depth and dimension to ATS. However, I am not a moderator nor an investor here.

Respect, grace and manners are required wherever we may be - and you, I and everyone else here must respect the wishes of the owners and decision-makers - not just because the rules are ATS "law," but also because respectful behaviour is just civilized.

You're okay Ren. All of us get a little chafed when our creativity is not recieved the way we might like. Frankly I think you're one of the better graphic artists on ATS and your avatar just plain rocks. Your contributions to ATS have been noted by this member, for sure.

Sorry if I was a little blunt.

Regenmacher,

Darn it. Dont you go away. I like you and your posts and you shouldnt let a little thing like this get in the way of your great posts.

Were you asked not to put up pics? Then you have to abide by the rules, simmer down and relax. Pictures arent everything.

I am a member here and i have a voice. I DONT WANT TO LOSE A GOOD POSTER.

Here's looking forward to your next post.....

PS.....I need you here to hold my hand during the upcoming nooklear war, not to mention 2012.

It is nice to see ATS has class, and I see their point they make & why this

rule is necessary! But it is hilarious to say the least but still could be

very offensive to some, and it's like Benevolent said, one wouldn't see

things like that on CNN etc. ATS has made a great name for themselves,

and their are jealous outside wolves that would Love to see ATS be put to

Shame! So ATS has class, & is trying hard I see to keepi it that way!
