I've been thinking hard for a truely good reason why we really NEED the internet. After finding out that the 7/7 bombers got the info they needed of the internet...

Extremists are increasingly making use of the internet in an effort to avoid detection by police. A new tactic is for terror "commanders" to set up encrypted websites, accessible only by a secret code, which give details of how to plan and orchestrate an attack.

www.nzherald.co.nz...

how also Muslim fanatics and terrorists in Iraq can show beheadings and air them for propoganda purposes for internet followers to see. (I dont know any links and wont look for any either. Besides its against the board rules). You can find links on how to make bombs, drugs, print fake money...anything!!!

And I still have not started on the paedophiles. There are literally 10's of 1000's of the ******** out there waiting to see acts of pure evil! Pornography is easily available to under-age kids, I know we all got to see the odd magazine when we was kids, but now a days you can see stuff they wouldnt dream of printing.

How much theft is happening every second 'on-line'? Personal details stolen, banks and health services hacked into. God only knows what else there is that I and you dont even know about!

So here is my question, do we really need the net? All its good for is information that you can get from a library, so you dont even get the exercise you used to! Its good for booking flights, hotels and cinema tix, but I could do that by walking down the street anyway. I know its fun and in the right hands its a good tool, but in the wrong hands its the Devil himself!

If this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it. I weren't too sure!

If we got rid of the internet, you would not be here to post your wisdom.

Even if we did not have the internet, there still would be many of the problems that you have just mentioned. They would just have to resort to other means.

The internet in itself is not what should be removed here, but rather the evil that lives and hides within.

But as I said, in the right hands its a good tool. And as for the sicko's they would never be able to do as much damage as they can thanks to the net!

I think we should get rid of cars, trucks, trains, planes, and ships.

They've caused a lot more deaths already than Islamic terrorists ever will.

We might be set back over a hundred years in terms of technology, but the world was so much more civil back then, I say it's worth reliving.

Well let's put it this way. If they did not have the internet to get their knowledge one of the other ways would've been some book. Whether it had been a science book or some underground book. Or they would've gone to some individual. Getting rid of the internet would not get rid of the knowledge to make weapons.

As for pornography back in the day it was dad's Playboy collection or some other way. Here there is an old guy who sells porno downtown to anyone with the money. Sure it is easy for kids to get to porn because of the internet but really it should be the responsibility of the parent to make sure that their kid is not looking at porn. Don't punish others because of a lack of parenting.

The internet has become much more than a source of knowledge. Think of how it has brought people together. At ATS for example we have people from England talking to Americans, people from Chile talking to people from Japan and it goes on and on.

The problem lays not within the internet but with the individuals who use it for wicked purposes. The internet is a neutral force with no concept of good or evil. It's the people who use it that cause it to be good or evil if we are to use such terms.

Naw!! We shouldn't get rid of it that would be like getting rid of the car and going back to the horse and buggy. anything you want to buy you can see it and order it right on the web man. Heck its like having the biggest and best wish book you ever saw.

In a very short time the Internet has become so important to business that you may as well ask if we could do without electricity. It is an integral part of the infrastructure of global commerce. Not the content mind you, but the servers, routers, and networks that make up the Internet.

The perverted, sick, twisted, (insert your own adjective here), content is a result of its openness. And the willingness of people to seek and pay for questionable content.

Could the Internet be shut off to all but the corporations? For commercial purposes only? Probably.

Unfortunately, it's far too late to engage this debate. The Internet is now as important a communication channel as the telephone was 20 yrs ago. And, there are wonderful communities like ATS/BTS that can be held as an example for the rest of the Internet.

To paraphrase someone brighter than me; don't complain about the dark, light a candle.

Okay lets then ban Cars because they can be used as a weapon. (Carbombs, Suicide runs, etc). Now lets ban running sneakers because them Suicide Bombers need good traction in order to get to the best position as possible to send themselves to heaven. Next let's ban these items: Network News, Fertilizer, Computers(just because the net is gone doesn't mean they can't dial up to a bbs using the phone lines), Phones and Cell Phones as well as their lines, books, etc.

Don't you see that by going this rout we are letting the fundamentalists win?

Show me another way you can get Joe Bloggs from Idaho to see a 5yr old getting raped or a American hostage getting his head cut off?

I know its an improbable question like banning knifes or high bridges so people cant kill themselves, but the net is a tool which benefits evil more than good....THATS my point!

Really? How many people have died that have been directly attributed to internet usage?

I have no idea of how to quantify such an equation to put it in perspective.

43,000 people have died due to Auto Accidents this year and it's far higher then the amount of people getting kidnapped, killed in a suicide attack, etc., the "Media Hype," has obviously gotten to you.

You can't kill an idea that in turn hurts yourself more then it hurts their cause. It would most likely embolden them, they will adapt by using untracable cellies, Dial-Up BBS's, bulleten boards on pirate webs(they will spring up sooner rather than later).

You would only hamper their communication efforts slightly. They would start to produce as many propoganda CD's as they possibly can and "circulate" them amoung to pirate webs and BBS's.

Also it removes us the chance to listen in on their communications.

They are the ones who want to return us to the dark ages, an information dark age would hurt US more than them. They prefer a world with a vacuum of reliable information, they thrive on ignorance and this is akin to book burning. Blaiming the medium and/or idea before the person/people at fault. Tsk tsk.

I guess your next step would be to ban Airline travel for civilians so they can't get over here that way?

uhhhhhhhh...I have more of a problem with the fact a 5 yearold was raped and a mans head cut off than the fact you could see it on the net.

as for it benifiting evil more than good?.......My kids used it for homework, which was great because I worked so many hours I didnt have time to send them to the Library. I have used it countless times to look up things I need. I use it to send and recieve pictures from my family that is scattered across the country and sometimes world. I play chess with people from EVERYWHERE.

It has helped me meet people I would have never met, see world issues in a little different light, find parts for my Bike, look up family history, see and talk to people from different cultures and religions, shop, pay bills, and oh yeah.....meet women......LOL

Its just a tool like any other

Delete Internet: Are You Sure?

I remember what life was like before the Internet. I don't ever want to go back.

The Internet is optional. In fact, it takes effort to get on it, so it's hardly an imposition on those who don't like it.

As for people abusing knowledge, the alternative is trying to force ignorance upon humanity.

We've been there, done that. It was called the Dark Ages.

Let there be light!
