Does anyone remember the "Doomsday Clock"

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has informed the world how long we had until "Midnight" since 1947, when its now-famous "Doomsday Clock" first appeared on the cover of the magazine "The Bulletin". Since then, the minute hand of the clock has moved forward and back to reflect the global level of nuclear danger and the state of international security.

www.thebulletin.org...

It's last update was in 2002, and from what I have seen the time between update's is around four years. What will the hands on the clock point to when/if the "Clock" is reset?

With North Korea threatening a "Preemptive Attack"

North Korean Defense Chief Warns Of Pre-Emptive Attack On US

SEOUL (AFP) - North Korea's defense chief has warned that Pyongyang could also launch a preemptive attack against the United States, with state media saying soldiers were ready to be "human bombs."

"A preemptive attack is not (the) monopoly of the US, and North Korea will never sit idle till it is exposed to a preemptive attack of the US," Defense Minister Kim Il-Chol said, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

"The US is now talking about the six-party talks but in fact, it is zealously inciting hostility toward North Korea while floating all sorts of sheer fictions, utterly indifferent to the talks," he said.

And the U.S. Planning one on Iran.

US Steps Up Plans For Possible Iran Attack

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. administration is stepping up plans for a possible air strike on Iran, despite publicly pushing for a diplomatic solution to a dispute over its nuclear ambitions, according to a report by influential investigative journalist Seymour Hersh.

Hersh's story in the April 17 issue of the New Yorker magazine, mostly citing unidentified current and former officials, says President George W. Bush views Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a "potential Adolf Hitler," and sees "regime change" in Tehran as the ultimate goal.

"This White House believes that the only way to solve the problem is to change the power structure in Iran, and that means war," Hersh quotes an unidentified senior Pentagon adviser on the war on terror as saying.

We are definately living in troubled times. What will the coming months bring? Is this all just "Saber-Rattleing"? Or are we in for a very destructive next couple of years? What do you think the "Clock" will point to when the next issue is published?

Yes, I also subscribed to the Bulletin for many years. It ultimately became too sophisticated - physics speaking - for my non-mathematical mind.

I think the clock will be pointed to Nine Minutes Until Midnight.

IMO, the Iran saber ratting is pure Republican November 7 hokum to bumfuzzle the American electorate, as the GOP did successfully in 2002 and again in 2004. Americans are afraid to change horses in mid-stream even if the horse has gone off the deep end. Broke its leg. Needs to be “put down.”

The best thing Geo W has going for him is the lamentable waning, “the devil we know is better than the devil we don’t know.”

Mr D/A, back around the late 1950s, there was indeed a "Doomsday Bomb." It was a hydrogen bomb wrapped in 4,000 pounds of cobalt. The bomb was rigged to detonate sort of automatically, if the Ruskies had lambasted us with 3,000 or 4,000 atom bombs via ICBMs. As a “parting gesture” we’d set a timer on the DD Bomb, say in 72 hours, and kiss your fanny good by. Such was the “thinking” around that time. As bad as it is today, it is better now. Only 3 rogue states threaten world peace today - North Korea, Iran and the United States of America. Hmm?

No such 'Doomsday Bomb' has actually been built. The 'Cobalt Bomb' was just a theory.
