Both Republican and Democratic senators have agreed on a plan for the 11 million or so illegal immigrants living in the United States. The plan would include tighter border control, a better flow for immigrants coming into the country, and citizenship for the illegal aliens.

www.msnbc.msn.com
"As outlined, the measure would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the future flow of immigrants into the United States and offer legalized status to the millions of men, women and children in the country unlawfully."

"While final details were not available, in general, the compromise would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship."

"Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers"

It's a decent start, but I doubt it'll work. This has been pushed through as quickly as possible because of the immigration protests that have happened recently. They're oding what they can to seem to be working for the good of the immigrants. But again, it's a step in the right direction. However, I don't agree with that the illegals already in the country for 5+ years can stay and get citizenship right away. they should HAVE to go back home and go through the process like everyone else.

Seems like a waste of time and money to me.
What I heard on the news, illegals who have been here 5+ years can stay and become citizens. 3 - 5 years go back to Mexico but can return and start proceedings to become legal.
Those with 2 yrs or less are sent back and cannot return.
And, who's gonna police this? Seems almost laughable and more of an election year trick than anything else to me anyway.

The best thing to come out of this bill, and keep in mind it is not a done deal as the article said, is that there will be stricter border control. Second, the new temporary workers will be paying taxes. It won't be long till they will expect a raise to compensate for that.

I believe that illegal immigrants that have been here more than five years do not have to return if they pay a $2,000 dollar fine, and they show they have held a job while they were here. Then it will take another 11 years to gain citizenship.

I think all this will be very expensive to enforce if it is even possible. Where is all this money going to come from?

Personally, I think this whole immigration reform issue was brought up due the slipping polls and this will give the impression the government is doing something. But it is an issue that has been festering for some time.

I guess time will tell.

This is a disgrace.

We reward illegal immigrants after they break our own laws?

What about all the people who respected our laws and tried to immigrate here legally? They have to wait while those who broke the law are going to get citizenship.

Not only that but you will see a horde at our borders trying to take advantage. The border problem will get WORSE not better.

They should be deported, business's fined that have illegal alien employees, and the border should be closed. Those that are waiting for immigration should get first choice over those whom did'nt respect our laws.

Oh and I want Presidential pardon for whatever crimes I may commit in my lifetime since its "OK" to break the law.

It's election time. Let’s use our corporate media outlets to tell them what they need to argue about. That way they won't realize that we have been systematically turning their democratic middle class into a third world slave class. Heh Heh Heh! (Note from Carl Rove to Dick Cheney found in Scooter Libby's pants pocket)

I am so sick of these elitist socialists telling us what we care about. Now it's immigration. Prediction - nothing will change except more of the middle class's tax dollars will be sucked down a hole that even the GAO of the Justice League’s Congress will never find. That's what they do. Another point - what better way to create a third world class in the US than to simply import it, do it slowly, and when we get 11 or 12 million illegal here, claim that it doesn't matter that they came here illegally, we can't get them all out, so we have to assimilate them (and people think politicians are dumb!) We have had all of the laws in place for years to handle illegal immigration. They just haven't been enforced. (OH NO!!! they got me . . . I'm talking about immigration ARRGGGGGGG!!!! Well I might as well finish my thought. NAFTA was sold to us as a means to create a middle class in Mexico. Clinton said (and I paraphrase) "Never mind that we have been closing some of our manufacturing plants in several industries and moving them out of country to avoid paying a living wage. It's all good cause they will be buying the goods we still make with the money that they will make from their new industry and fair wages." Sounded good, but could we really trust his definition of "is"?
Fact... two years later Mexican workers were working in worse conditions and instead of two billionaires of record there were twenty or so. Two of which were the new president and his brother. By the way, this was the same time that the BCCS money laundering scandal occurred (oh what a tangled web...) involving George Bush and investigated by fellow Skull and Bones member John Kerry*. NAFTA did such a good job of accomplishing the exact opposite of what it was supposed to, that we now have more Hispanics living in my home town of Columbus, Ohio then I remember seeing in Phoenix the last time I was there. (OK, slight exaggeration, but you get the point.) Furthermore, the manufacturing business in this country is just about extinct; the tech jobs are now in the process of moving out, they are getting rid of medical benefits and even threatening people’s pensions just in time to ease the passing of the baby boomers still hanging around. Anyway, I don't know what all the fuss is about with immigration. After all, once the illegal aliens are legal and have to pay taxes, those seven dollar an hour jobs won't look so good anymore. At any rate, the way things are going it won't matter on which side of the Alamo you live, we will all be in the same hacienda.

* For those of you not familiar - according to one of the investigators under Kerry “no real investigation was ever made." I did not re-check this quote so it may be slightly inaccurate, but you can check it for yourself in "Rule by Secrecy" by Jim Mars. The point being made was to illustrate how Skull and Bones members look out for each other across party lines. I was re-reading the book during the ramp up to the last "election." Imagine my surprise when I saw Kerry and papa Bush being used as the example to make this point.

No deal, immigration bill stalls as congress prepares for spring break.

Senate immigration overhaul in doubt -Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate compromise on an overhaul of immigration law appeared to get bogged down late on Thursday in the face of opposition by some Republicans who say it would give amnesty to lawbreakers.

It appeared unlikely the Senate would approve before a two-week congressional break on Friday the radical immigration reform that would give millions of illegal immigrants a chance to earn U.S. citizenship.

The bill's backers expressed fear that failure to enact the legislation before lawmakers leave for their spring break could hurt its chances in a congressional election year.

It's so refreshing to come to a place where people have a genuine concern for others in the world who are less fortunate than themselves. I think of the quote....

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door" -from "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus, as found on our Statue of Liberty

This is one of the main principles that our country was founded on. The day that we forget those less fortunate than ourselves is the day that we begin to bring greater judgement on ourselves. We're already going to have to answer for plenty of other judgements that we pass on others in the world.

Let us continue to welcome immigrants. Immigrants add much more to us than we know. Our forefathers were immigrants...nearly every one of them. Only Native Americans can actually say they are true Americans and I'd expect them to welcome immigrants today as they almost always did.

I've noticed an arrogance among many U.S. Citizens today that despises Latin Immigrants in particular and they really don't know why. They think that they invade and use up our social services. Though that happens, the problem does not lie in the immigrants but rather our system...fix it!!

To those who would judge the Latin American, I ask:

Have you ever spent a day in the home of a Mexican Immigrant, to dine with him and enjoy his hospitality?

Have you ever tried to help a Latino immigrant to gain legal status and really found out how difficult it is?

Do you know a Mexican Immigrant well enough to know his political persuasions and his/her personal reasons why?

This is a time when we should step back, be grateful for what we have and stretch out the hand of friendship to our neighbors. Our closest neighbors we should care for more than those across the oceans. If it ever came down to a war or other calamity that threatened our continent, the Canadians and Mexicans would be right there at our sides. Can we say the same for other nations in the world?

hmmm...

this seems like a "watered down Bill" , as we call it in the UK, from first look, it does not look very strict and i can see this bill causing problems.
