John McCain takes heat over proposed immigration policies

Later, the senator outlined his position on the Senate immigration debate, saying tougher border enforcement must be accompanied by guest-worker provisions that give illegal immigrants a legal path toward citizenship.

Murmurs from the crowd turned to booing. "Pay a decent wage!" one audience member shouted.

"I've heard that statement before," McCain said before threatening to leave.

I thought it was funny in the article where it states that McCain offered $50 an hour to anyone that was willing to pick lettuce in Arizona, then when one person takes him up on it, he backs away from the topic.

I have not read how the people of Arizona feel about illegal immigration as a whole. I wonder how they would have reacted to his speach had he given it somewhere in his home district.

Thoughts?
