Because of bird flu the fish prices are at a historic high in Russia. Lack of meat coupled with the bird flu makes people eat more fish. Banned deliveries of chilled salmon and trout from Norway adds to shortage of fish in Russia. Increasing demand + shortage of fish = Record level fish prices.

Kommersant: Bird Flu Hits Salmon

Apr. 04, 2006

Wholesale prices for fish escalated to historical peak by late past week, having climbed up to 100 percent depending on the fish in the past a month and a half. The surge is attributed to the general lack of beef and pork on the market coupled with the bird flu and the subsequent drop in poultry’s popularity.

People are shifting to fish prompted by lack of meat coupled with the bird flu, said Defa CEO Denis Repinsky. “Evidently, the fish will replace neither beef nor pork. And the price surge could be thought speculative to the greater extent.”

I wonder if this will be a worldwide phenomena and not just in Russia. If the avian flu spreads there will be shortage of meat, and people are going to eat more fish. Maybe we are going to fight against the whales for what´s left of fish in the ocean?
