they're putting the meteor A2A missile on the JSF. It has longer range on the Amraam this si going to be great for A2A. 180 F/A 22's 1700-2000JSF's, all those F 15's E/F 18 SUperhornets, and E/18 growlers that's a seroius air threat you got there.A

No, they are developing a smaller version capable of fitting into the JSF. On whose JSF it would be used is a different discussion

I am pretty sure the USA wont buy the Meteor. The Meteor is a real killer, a killer of the AMRAAM market. Furthermore, many European countries at once will benefit from the Meteor sales. The US cant even increase that success by buying it, and they have to step up projects to counter the export prospects of the Meteor; and in addition to that comes the american senate which isnt exactly fond of defense technology trade that goes IN the country.

Come to think about it, this is really funny. It´s always been said "The Raptor would shoot down every other aircraft before they even see it". Now its more like "The Raptor must hope not to be seen while it crosses that 50-60km gap as it is only a camouflaged sitting duck for a long time"...

Granted, this is mostly a theoretical argument as the Meteor wont be a huge success in possibly hostile (read: poor) countries, nevertheless its a distinct disadvantage for the american a2a capability.

Umm... even the current Aim-120 that the Raptor uses has a range of more than 70 KM, and by the time the Meteor is in production so will the Aim-120D. So yes it still will shoot down most aircraft before it is even detected.

and as i keep saying to ch about this wonderful missle - who actually supllies to 2 (yes 2) mid course updates needed to actually get it near to its target?

the shooting aircraft will guide it 99% of the time (similar to the way SARH works - the nose of the aircraft has to be pointed at the target)

unless somehow the pixies spread magical fairy dust to guide it

Well, I don't know where you got that 99% from, if that's true then our AWACS crews are out of business. Anyway, the good thing about the Raptor is that each aircraft has a data link with every other aircraft, this enables only one Raptor to be the “eyes and ears” of the entire group. So one Raptor can be used for the midcourse data links while the rest are outside the kill envelope. By the way, the Meteor requires midcourse updates too.

from what i understand one of the big things the the meteor has over the amraam is range and a shorter missile will mean less fuel which means less range so a shorter meteor wont be much better if at all better than the amraam.

Not necessarily. Even a significantly shortened missile can retain the same or even higher volume by simply widening the body a bit. Basic geometry

And by your logic, that would mean that remodeling would completely and utterly pointless because that would mean that the same area of space would still be taken up. And if that happens, that means it either won't fit either way or it won't allow space for other missiles and equipment. Also it sort of degrades performance of the craft carrying it due to no loss of weight since it covers the same area. So if a light aircraft is designed to carry a small missile and you stick a meteor missile that has been widened and not designed for that aircraft, it's like giving a gun to a baby, it shouldn't have it, and it is doing any good with it.

If you widen and shorten the body then its not the meteor any more. and its not just a modification. the whole areodynamics and internal layout will have to be changed so you might as well build a new missile from scratch.

Hey you two, I only commented on the wrongful conclusion that shortening a missile necessarily results in less range.

and me and shattered sky just commented that you are wrong and th\at its not as simple as you seem to think it is.
