Jack Abramoff was sentenced today to serve no less than to five years and seven months in a federal prison. Abramoff and his co-conspirator, Adam Kidan, pleaded guilty to wire fraud for there role in falsifying a 23 million dollar wire transfer in order to get 60 million dollars in financing. The money was intended to buy a fleet of SunCruz casinos. They are to report to the federal prison in 90 days.

In court Wednesday, Abramoff said the fraud case was "incredibly painful" for himself, his family and his friends.

"In the past two years I have started the process of becoming a new man," he said.

Under their plea agreement, both men had faced a sentence of between five years, 10 months, and seven years, three months in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Paul C. Huck also ordered them Wednesday to pay restitution of more than $21 million.

Abramoff and Kidan admitted concocting a fake $23 million wire transfer to make it appear they had made a large cash contribution to the $147.5 million purchase of SunCruz Casinos. Based on that fake transfer, lenders provided the pair with $60 million in financing.

The same week Abramoff pleaded guilty to the SunCruz fraud, he entered guilty pleas to three federal charges as part of a wide-ranging corruption probe that could involve up to 20 members of Congress and aides, including former House Majority Leader
Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

With this and the Indian gambling scandle, Abramoff deserves the book to be thrown at him. Regardless of political standing, corruption can not be tolerated. His light sentence is a joke, but I guess it helps to have friends in the Right places. These white collar thugs should get the same treatment as the rest of us. Or even better, let the natives deal with him.

This is a good day for justice.

As I understand it, the sentence he received is the miniumum sentence allowed. So imho not a real a good day for justise. One has to wonder if he bought off the judge to get such a light sentence.

just a slap in the wrist. . . the people that benefited from his deals are still at large he will do his time or some of it.

Then he will have a nice littler place waiting for him thanks to the same people that he did business with.

And life for the ones in power will go on.

It ain't over, till it's over.

Abramoff has more sentencing to deal with later this year and a lot more squealing to do.

In the Washington case, Abramoff pleaded guilty to conspiracy to corrupt public officials, mail fraud and tax evasion. He faces 30 years in prison in that case, although the Justice Department said it will recommend a reduced sentence depending on how much he cooperates. bloomberg

Will the time for each of the various crimes be served concurrently or consecutively? Lets say he got 7 years each for 5 seperate crimes, if the sentencing was concurrent he would serve a total of 7 years, whereas if the sentencing was consecutive he would serve 35 years.

Interesting point. Perhaps here at ATS we should keep track of this judge and see where he ends up.

After he gets out of prison, will they put a bullet in his head for feeding the corruption of the government and helping to destroy the country??

He is merely a redeemed whistleblower at this point...
he will get minimum sentences on his future charges also...

But he might just meet jesus, and turn this WHOLE problem out into the sun...
I can only hope that he sees the true error of his ways, and ruins the party for all of them.

all the sheeples need to know, that this is BIG!
tell the family, bring the kids, this might very well be the saving grace of United States of America.

Or it could just make lobbiests get more sneaky...

No less than 5? It must have been well worth it to him and the rest of them.
They should sit and rot.
