I'd say that article is a bit skewed. For example, it makes much of Shriner fundraising dollars going to non-charitable expenses, but passes over the fact that they are always identified as such. Such as Shrine log candy bar wrappers and circus tickets stating: "Fundraising For Temple Activities".

I think a more accurate and unbiased view can be found here.

Shriners Hospitals for Children picked up the medical tab for more than 123,000 children last year, due to a massive endowment larger than the economy of the Mediterranean island of Malta.

The author of that article surely has a good sense of humour to cite Malta in the same breadth as a masonic organization!
