First of all the video is shot at night as opposed to your image in your post.
Screen grab,

As for the video it's impressive, but i think the 'blurring' of the text details at the bottom of the window is unnecessary.

this UFO was witnessed about 10 times over the summer of 2005 in norfolk, va. the picture is from the first sighting, during a thunderstorm. it was captured through the actual video footage simultaniously with a lightning strike. the UFO was under the cloudcover. the video posted is of the second sighting (i was more prepared with a tripod). as far as the blurry text, it is the date, time, and my name. at the time i wasn't familiar with my editing software and havent fixed it..my apologies.

I am inclined to say that could just as easily be a helicopter with a bright light on it.

I am not saying it is...but given there is no unworldly maneuvers or sound, it could be interpreted as such.

Thanks for sharing.

Umm...that must be the most crappiest video I have ever seen in my life... Not to be rude, but this video looks as if someone is shining a flashlight in the distance
However...the pictures are something else.

They may be plausible... But they also look like they could be a cluster of silver balloons. It is also looked like a helicopter to a friend of mine who was also viewing the image.

Auto-Focus: an electronic method to ensure everything in the scene in uniformly out of focus.

Off hand, since we don't time/date/direction or other details yet, and since the image doesn't appear to move, it's probably Venus. It put on quite a show that summer. Here in Texas it looked like a spinning diamond. The vid keeps going in and out of focus, but that's normal with an auto-focus video camera.

Here's some a site that has all the details and some interesting animations:
www.aaa.org...
and here's an animation from August, 2005.

What degree off the horizon was it? There appears to be a hell of alot of scintellation going on, and if it was summer and low on the horizon add some distance, and thats whats giving it the semi-flash warbling.

I cant tell much from it here at work, as my monitor is rather dark for work purposes.

I wouldnt hazard a guess without a direct copy...it's just too little information.

thank you everyone for your opinions...i see how the short clip provided lead some to believe it is a helicopter...i assure you it is not..my sister flies ch-46's in the navy. rand..venus was spectacular that summer!! this however also wasnt the explaination since the 1st sighting was under the cloudcover, ruling out all celestial object. here is a 5 min video..100mb (very big, thats why i didnt post it before) now you can track its movement. playing it back at a faster rate is quite incredible. thanks everyone again.. s65.yousendit.com...

So, time/date/direction/location?
So far, you've shown a dancing light. Nobody's going to take it seriously without some background.

ok..here is the report submitted to hbccufo of the FIRST sighting (picture in first post)

UFO witness report
Wednesday, July 27th 2005
Norfolk, Virginia USA
9:00 PM
object located in western hemisphere

Oh how I love storm watching. The rumbling thunder and spectacular lightshows, to the pouring rain and endless candlelit games of charades during power outages. On the evening of July 27th, 2005 at approximately 9:00pm, my girlfriend and I witnessed an object flying that was, and remains, unidentified. Was its purpose to view the storm, or for the storm to help view it.
The anticipation of an ending record breaking “heat wave” had been felt all day. Finally these 100+ degree daytime highs were going to be crushed by a cold front, resulting in large, severe thunderstorms. In fact, weather reports earlier in the day were claiming that the huge ban of thunderstorms (from Texas to New England) were producing wind gusts up to 60mph, and large hail stones. As soon as I heard the emergency broadcast alerts by means of television, I knew it was coming.
After a few rumbles of thunder were heard, I decided to head outside to spectate. It was about 8:45pm and the sun was set, yet there was still a shimmer of light in western sky coming through the clouds of the oncoming storm. I sat in my usual spot on the deck steps. Our deck is roofed which provides excellent storm watching without getting wet. My eyes were wondering back and forth between my 11mo old puppy playing in the yard and the inconsistent flashes of lightning reflecting off neighboring houses. As I looked to my right, I noticed a bright star in between two parallel power lines from my vantage point. It flickered violently between white and amber colors, just as a star rapidly twinkles in the distance…the object didn’t appear to be moving at all and I thought to myself, maybe this is a planet because it seems much larger than even the largest, brightest star. So there I was trying to decipher the object and realized that whatever it was seemed to be under the veil of storm clouds. There was no clear patch in the clouds to peek at the humbling vastness of space. So as I watched this mysterious light in the sky, it became clear that it was moving. I performed many visual tests with stationary objects (power lines) to make sure the object was moving. This went on for about two minutes before I decided to ask my girlfriends opinion and grab my video camera. I began recording for a total of 6 minutes. The glowing object ever so slowly hovers to my east and descends. There was approximately 4 more min of viewing before the object descends below the treeline and out of view. That are not in this footage. As far as the objects actual size and distance I have no idea. At approximately 9:45 pm I decided to call the non-emergency line of one of the Norfolk police depts. I asked the officer (or whomever answered my call) if there had been any reports of unidentified flying objects in the area within the past hour or so. He said not at that particular station, but inquired about my sighting. I explained and his response was that a logical explanation was that there is always a high amount of helicopter traffic from local tv stations etc in the area. I thanked the man for his time and hung up. This object was NOT an airplane (although Norfolk International Airport is within about 7 miles from my location). The object was definitely NOT a helicopter (my sister flies CH-46 helicopters for the navy and my father is a retired commander). There were no signs of any flashing beacons. The object was NOT a star or planet due to its movement and location under the clouds. I am not 100% sure on the following topic of balls of light appearing in storms due to the electrically charged atmosphere so I cant rule it out. More personal research will tell. Here is a video capture in mpeg format from the original, non duplicated hi-8 sony video camera tape. The transfer appears darker than the original tape, but I didn’t want to edit the picture quality in any way. The only editing done is a layer of text with date time location and my name. The most exhilarating image however appears when I took a still photo of the image during the illumination of a lightning flash. I challenge all of you to dissect this footage with my full cooperation to help in ANY WAY NECESSARY. I was privileged to witness this event and hope this footage can provide some stepping stone closer to truth.

please feel free to contact me with ANY questions…

thank you for your eyes, ears, and mind,
Nathan

here is the report submitted for the SECOND sighting (video link posted
above)

UFO witness report
Norfolk, Va.
8-4-05
9:10 PM
object located wsw

To make a long story short, I was on the way with my girlfriend to her grandfathers house to help with some laundry when the same object witnessed 8 days prior, was spotted again, in roughly the same location. I thought at first I was just still amped from the last sighting and was transforming a bright star into a UFO. Luckily the stoplight ahead just turned red so I had a minute to perform a movement test with a stationary telephone pole. The object was indeed moving but I tried to convince myself that my head was moving ever so slightly to reveal the object from behind the pole.
We live only 2 miles from her grandfathers and were within a block from his house. The mild amber flicker the object emitted however was all to familiar and fresh in my mind to take the chance of letting it go undocumented. I floored it, dropped my girlfriend off and sped back to my house to grab the camcorder (and tripod this time!!). I still was very pessimistic. I flew back to the end of my girlfriends grandfathers street where there just so happens to be a baseball field and park and set up to record.

There is a total of 12 minutes of footage, edited into a 5min clip of different vantage points. The object moves very slowly and descends into the trees. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at: [email protected] for there are many other details. I would also love to hear feedback with possible explanations of what this object might be.

there is all the information...sorry for the delay and lack of info..work work work
enkidu...you sure are the ats expert! sparkley light!! youve solved the mystery...case closed!

I have some info for you, and the interpretation will depend on your actual location and the direction to the object. It would help if you could clarify the direction you were looking when you first saw the object, then the direction you were looking when it finally disappeared. It would also help to know where you were in relation to Norfolk, within, say five miles or so. In town? Suburbs? NSEW? I don't need your address or anything, and it won't change my findings. I'm just going to post what I learned later tonight when I get home and let you decide for yourself.

It's a little sparkly light in the sky. Could be Venus. Probably not a helicopter, because it doesn't apparently flash like it's supposed to. If it doesn't do anything cool, like spin in little circles or move in zig-zag patterns, then we kind of have to assume it's some kind of conventional aircraft. Of course, it could just be a lazy UFO that doesn't fly in cool patterns, but that's a bad logical jump.

The basic fact is that without additional details, either gleaned from your description or from the video itself, it's a twinkly light in the sky that is probably either a star or an airplane. We can't evaluate it any further than that without making big, illogical assumptions.

Arghhh!...the ATS server went down around line 200 of this post and I lost all my witty prose. Rally gotta learn to do it all offline with a text editer and paste it in later...this version is not going to be nearly as entertaining, I can guarantee.

Ok, we got good news and bad news and worse news.

The good news is, it's probably not a blimp
but I do have a new toy to play with.

The bad news, if you want to think of it that way, is that almost the entire population of Norfolk had an unobstructed view of the western horizon between 830pm and 9:45pm, July 27, 2005. Only devolution knows his precise location, so only he can gauge how this affects his sighting.

In what follows you'll notice "July 28"; that's because everything is in Univeral Time (aka Zulu aka GMT), and 8pm EDT = midnight the next day UT.

Here's the Norfolk Nexrad image from that night at 8:30pm EDT. There's a line of thunderstorms extending up the Appalachians, along with a local disturbance just SSW of Norfolk. The pale blue/grey bullseye is ground clutter around the KAKQ-TV Nexrad radar tower.

One of the things you can do with the right software (see below) is view slices of the storms; the lowest-angle slices show the ground-level rain, while greater angles allow you to observe the upper cloud structure. Here's a closer look at the ground-level storm, followed by a look at the mid-level cloud deck.
Although the clouds almost cover the city, they don't extend much past the central metropolitan area, and don't reach to the ground. You can figure out the height of the clouds easily enough knowing the distance and the scan angle; at 8:45 it turns we have about 15000 ft. clearance above the center of the city.

And you can also see that there are no other clouds to the west for over 50 miles (actually, there are no significant clouds for more like 200 miles at the moment, but we're jsut concered with the view to the horizon).

And, to top it off, a sequence from 8:45pm to 9:45pm. Notice that the storm drifts east and slightly north, opening the skies to the west.

But don't take my word for it, I could be wrong, you know. All the links are posted below so you can check things out yourself. A tiny pop-up storm blew up about 40 miles southwest of the city, but I'm too tired to download another image. Check it yourself, as I said.

And now the worse news.

Both Jupiter and Venus were in the western sky that night. Venus, in particular, was almost exactly west at 8:00pm, at an elevation of 22 degrees, drifting to the WNW before disappearing about 9:45pm. It was also shining at around magnitude -3.5, which is not as bright as its -4.4 best, but pretty respectable, nonetheless, and much bright than Jupiters -1.8. Jupiter was somewhat further south and about 20 degrees higher in the sky.

LINKS and such.

NEXRAD archives are available from NOAA, along with a free Java viewing tool. Really cool and reccommended to any serious UFO researcher.
www.ncdc.noaa.gov...
Just follow their directions and click on 'Launch the Java NEXRAD Viewer (includes Data Exporter)'. There are files covering 1991 to yesterday. Be sure to remember that they use UT.

With that in mind, here's the easiest time-zone converter I know of (for the US, anyway).
tycho.usno.navy.mil... for Daylight Saving Time
tycho.usno.navy.mil... for Standard Time

The planetary tables came from the US Navy Observatory, which also has many other nifty astronomical and mathematical tools available.

I'm grateful to the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York for their own archives of celestial events for July 2005.

Now I'll leave it to devolution and others to check out the information for the sighting at GrandPop's place.

PS., devolution I absolutely share your enthusiasm for storms

Rand, I cant tell you how much your time and research is appreciated. I was unable to get the NCDC data to work..after I ordered the data..i just couldn’t get it going. So ill use your data. First things first. Here is the video of the 1st sighting which will compliment your research. s51.yousendit.com...

A few questions because I am far from an expert. Not quite to scale, but good enough to get an estimate of distance of cloudcover . I have no idea how to calculate distance and angles etc. etc. We have the distance and the location of venus from my relative location. I think between Venus and Jupiter, venus would be the prime candidate due to its -3.5 mag. As you’ve shown. Now that you have my exact location, can you do the math to figure if the 16mi cloudcover would allow venus to be visible. No other stars were visible and the UFO/venus had no obstruction from clouds. Although hard to judge, it seemed to be much closer than the au 1.368220372. the photo also suggests a solid emitting a triangular shaped light source beneath. Take a look at some of these:
Link to image - dcnozzle5uh.jpg

Link to image -kb1a3nh.jpg

Link to image - kb94uo.jpg

Here is a similar ufo

A gentleman by the name of sam johnson analyzed the videos and came up with some interesting findings. His background of propulsion put an interesting spin on things. Would a planet look like these from a video image?

Another question. I have no idea how to calculate the time/distance /speed that venus would travel. These still images show the distance the object travels.

This is the distance traveled in 79 seconds…here’s another

This is only 2min. do planets really appear to travel that fast?? As I said im no expert. You know much more than I and again I am so stoked that you took the time to research this. Hope to hear back soon! whoa..sorry so large

Mod Edit: Some images were too big. Changed them into links instead..
