A Collapsing Presidency Will it take the country down with it?

By Paul Craig Roberts, former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury
in the Reagan Administration. The author's bio is here.

...What is going to rescue Bush? Not the Republican Party. A few Republican congressmen, such as Walter Jones, are trying to get a debate going, but Republicans believe that they are stuck to the fate of their man. There is no one within the administration to turn Bush toward diplomacy and away from coercion.

Created on the principle that "you are with us or against us," Bush's administration is all of one mind. They are all neocons. There are no real conservatives or traditional Republicans in the Bush administration. This is the first administration in my lifetime in which there is no debate. The absence of debate means there is no check on reckless and ill-advised policies and corrupt schemes.

Neocons don't believe in debate. They specialize in slandering critics and stamping out debate. Dissent is not possible within the Bush administration, because dissent is equated with treason and anti-Americanism. "You are with us or against us." Increasingly, Republicans demonize their critics as "abettors of terrorism." The Republicans' intolerance for debate makes many Americans uneasy about the real purpose of the $385 million detention camp that Halliburton is building in the U.S. for the Bush administration.

Neocons don't believe in diplomacy. They believe in coercion. Neocons denigrate diplomacy as the epitome of weakness. Neocons slap down diplomacy before it can rise. The Iranians offered talks, and neocon National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley immediately slapped down the offer as "simply a device by the Iranians to try to divert pressure that they are feeling." The Bush neocons are bent on war with Iran. They don't want any talks. In their books, neocons have demonized Muslims in the same way that the Nazis demonized Jews. Demonization makes talks impossible...

The neocons stole the GOP and bastardized it. The scary thing is that
we might get Shrillary next and she's just a neocon in sheep's clothing.

Deep pocket lobbyists and corporate cronies run rampant DC,
their game is screwing consumers and workers to the hilt

Makes me wonder how "we the people" could condone
any part of pillaging ourselves for these sellout scum.

The Presidency is not collapsing, no matter what the Bush-haters wish. Second term Presidents traditionally suffer in the polls, and this trend is exacerbated by the war in Iraq, which has been controversial since before the invasion. Controvserial measures carried out in the name of national security have also brought the most rabid opportunists out from under their rocks or out of their coffins, or just wherever they may normally hide to get a few cheap shots in when those with genuine fortitude are most vulnerable.

Is the antiwar site run by socialists or something like that I remember. Bush is doing poorly in the poles because the left wing media is desperate for the Dems to take back the House in 2008. But all they got is to attack Bush on initiatives that he undertook for other powerful people that they dare not attack.

The same people who think Bush's presidency is collapsing are the same ones who think this administration has manipulated the American people into war with Iraq by making up "WMD's", let the WTC act happen, and is using wiretapping for spying against John Q. AverageJoe? If Bush can manipulate all this, then SURELY he can manipulate P-O-L-L numbers AND keep his administration rock-solid by using all these devices to his advantage.
Just more liberal media anti-Bush B.S.! The only thing I find offensive about the way this country is being run is the fact that Bush hasn't spanked the oil companies for bending the American public over to churn record profits this last year!!!!

No matter what the Bush butt-kissers say, they still suffer in denial like an alcoholic bum who would sell out his Mom for a beer.

You mean traditional losers and criminals suffer in the polls.

That's carried out in the name of the Orwellian ministry of truth under the guise of national security and regurgitated by Bushspeak clones.

Genuine fortitude in regards to fraud, falsifications
and deception as in a genuine fabricator. You
must of made a spelling typo.

So have some lunch, you buy of course.

Democrats or Republicans are all the same corporate sellouts lately, and their policies are dictated by mega-conglomerates and transationals. The D.C. puppet show is to placate the sheep and keep them from looking behind the curtains.

Clinton vows to block bill criminalizing illegal immigrants - Newsday

"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scriptures," Clinton said, "because this bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself."

For the most part I agree with GradyPhilpott .
Somehow I dont Bush will be impeached or leave office before 2008 -9.
Moderates are sick of hearing members of the Bush admin blame the media and political oppontons for there own blunders. To be fair Im also sick of people who blame Bush for anything they can get his name next to.
As for Bush poll ratings think of it this way.
If you had a 34% approval rating at work you would get fired.
If you scored 34% on an exam you wouldnt come near a pass mark.
