Consider AOL as an infectious disease if you are with a new provider try your best to remove all things AOL from your machine.

By removing your old connection, it will not improve your current connection however will keep the headaches to a minimum with the popups of AOL.

With the cable connection, you will always be connected to the internet, so the risk of infection is greater. Be sure to stock up on Spyware protection and Antivirus protection.

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

You can remove the AOL from there.
