The ATS-3 UAV thread has hardly been the runaway success of the old ATS-1 fly-off. Obviously UAVs aren't sexy enough for you lot!

Ok, here's a cooler idea; there's a bit of a fad for "Sports Jets" going on. it started with people buying ex-military jets and now designers are coming up with all sorts of sportsjet design intended to look like military jets but be cheaper, safer and easier to fly. Real world examples include:
Javelin:

Viperjet:

Bielik:

Sport Jet:

Basic design criterea:
Minimum of two people
Jet powered
Maximum speed no more than mach 0.9 (if jet is faster, it'd have to be limited).
Unarmed in basic config (lol)
Look cool
Max wingspan 15m

Your mission should you choose to accept it: Design and present your ideas for a cool sports jet in this thread. Submission closing: 2 weeks from today after which there will be a vote.

OK then I'll kick this one off. THE BUG.

Haven't got a clue about what the technical spec would be! But it's a two seater and it's limited to mach 0.9 (allowing for it to be 'chipped' for extra performance like automobiles). Comes in either white or camo-dude colours for the potential soldier of fortune in all of us!

Enjoy

Now that is cool.

Here's my first thoughts:

It uses a variation on the box-wing idea for less drag and reduced stalling speed (safer/shorter landings).

Hi My apologies for posting here ( can't u2u people yet)
but I have a few questions for you all
Which software package do you design these planes on and do you import them into any sort of fs ?
Just wondering as I build rc aircraft and I'm looking for a new plane and the bug looks kindof cool.

Hm, I think I may just have to make an entry for this cntest.

To bad I can't make the cool CG images of designs like all of you, but oh well.

But, just to make sure I get this, it should'nt be able to go faster tha 0.9 MACH, but your not gonna discipline us if it go's a little bit faster than that?

My drawings are actually not 3D models at all. I draw them in MS Paint and then render them in ArcSoft Photostudio5 which came free with my scanner.

I use Solidworks, it's not a 3d GFX program, but 3d CAD for machine parts... But it does work adequately for aircraft models

Another one. A four seater this time.

BTW....Flibble.....

I use Anim8or (which is free) and Curious Labs Poser (which isn't!) for the modelling and rendering.

Cheers.

Any other submissions before we take this to public vote?

Cool post.

It's obvious there are some very talented people here.

That said, and not trying to highjack the post, I wonder if later on down the line someone with the skills to do so could start a prop driven fighter contest/post?

To me, some of the more interesting aircraft came at the end of WW2 with the great majority of them not seeing service or flight due to the introduction of jets.

I'm not saying to post photos of already done aircraft.
What I would like to see would be what some of the free-thinkers would come up with as far as prop designs go.

Either turbine or IC engines would be ok.

i had a desing, but because it's pretty similar to planemans Mantis so i decided not make it a contestor unless planeman OKs it.

That's cool, we can include that. I'm thinking about dropping myy Mantis proposal anyhow - I prefer my Spyder idea on purly aesphetic (sp?) grounds.

Here's an diagram of the internal layout:

I've ditched the ejector seats idea as OTT. A major issue is luggage space - maybe luggage pods not unlike drop tanks?

and the canard foreplanes are in a naff place for getting in and out of the cockpit, but aerodynamically that's where they'd want to be.

Ok, don't make fun of me, I drew this a year ago, and I'm not the best artist.
It looked so much cooler in my minds eye when I made it.

Anyways, this is really the only design I've ever made that's a "sport jet".
