Al Quds, a division of Iran's Revolutionary Guards is infiltrating Iraq according to US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, an action that Rumsfeld said Iran will look back on as a serious "error in judgement." General Peter Pace, chairman of the US military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said that he believes that some IEDs used against allied forces in Iraq are traceable to Iran. Britain made claims last October that Iran was supplying IED technology that had claimed the lives of British forces in southern Iraq. Iran denies any involvement, but the IEDs are configured in the same way as IEDs used in Lebanon by Hezbollah, which gets its support from both Iran and Syria.

Iranian revolutionary forces have been infiltrating Iraq, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said.
"They [Iran] are currently putting people into Iraq to do things that are harmful to the future of Iraq," Mr Rumsfeld told a news conference. We know it, and it is something that they... will look back on as having been an error in judgement," he added.

His comments come amid an upsurge in sectarian violence in Iraq, touched off by the bombing of a sacred Shia shrine. Asked whether the alleged insertion of Iranian forces into Iraq was backed by the central government in Tehran, Mr Rumsfeld said: "Of course, the Quds force does not go milling around willy-nilly, one would think."

While Iraq teeters on the brink of civil war, Iran is keeping the rest of the world ill at ease over their nuclear program, by their sponsorship of terrorism in Lebanon, and now by infiltrating Iraq. The world community seems united in a tenuous way against Iran's efforts to develop nuclear weapons, with Russia and China urging them to relent. India has gone on record as opposing regime change in Iran, but wants a "mutually acceptable" solution to the problem and Iran's Revolutionary Guard insists that the US is bluffing.

The Bush administration has made it abundantly clear today with statements from Rumsfeld, Cheney, and the White House that Iran's actions are being taken seriously and that, in Cheney's words, there would be "meaningful consequences" for Iran. Let us hope that the "mutually acceptable" resolution India hopes for can be realized.
