Active X controls can not harm you if you run Unix. However, they represent a serious risk to web clients on a Windows system. Active X controls, which are nothing more than arbitrary executables, are downloaded from the web and run. Even when they do not run unless digitally signed by a trusted publisher it has been shown that one can become a publisher by pretending to be Microsoft. The Active X security model is based on the notion that if code is signed, it should be trusted. I would recommend not installing Active X and/or turning Active X off.
