An Italian parliamentary commission has concluded that the former Soviet Union was behind the 1981 assassination attempt on the late Pope John Paul II.

Source.

So, the Soviet Union thought enough of the Popes ties to the democracy-linked Solidarity labour movement in Poland that they tried to kill him. Seems quite audacious for the head of the Catholic church [membership at the end of 2003: 1,085,557,000]. I wonder had the would-be assassin been successful, would he have gone down in history as just another "lone-gunman"? After all, it has taken 25 years for this truth to out.
