since WHEN ???????????

UN arrests Australian union official

An Australian union official charged with assaulting a United Nations police officer has spent two nights in an East Timor lock-up and been forced to surrender his passport, the UN said.

Now just as background........ East Timor is currently setting up their own workplace arbitration system based on the Australian model, which is highly unionised, and also very successful. Wether you agree with unions or not, I have to question the targetting of ONE union official., especially being from the MAritime Union. THis union was the basis of a court action a few years ago regarding a lockout on the docks of union members.

International unions described Killick's arrest as unprecedented and unjustified interference by the UN in industrial issues.

Yeah, recently there was a poster on this board that got on his soap box about how all us uneducated UN-haters need to get learned up on the history of the UN.

Thanks for posting this...yet another instance of the UN expanding its role WAY outside the original intent of the organization and getting in issues it has NO business in.

National sovereignty is threatened everywhere.

Always thought the term "United Nations" had a sinister tone to it,like united against what? would always seem to pop into my head for some reason, sounds now like the nations are uniting against national sovereignty, not hiding it so much any more it seems, which seems to be occurring world-wide.
If the government of a country cannot keep that country functioning, how is it more government will fix the problem?.
Snowball effect, bigger government is not better, the UN seems to be pursuing becoming the BIGGEST government.
Nations need to be united against a common foe that threatens them in times of war or emergency, anything else could be considered pre-emptive,we all know what that will get us,if not into a lot of trouble and waste in a pre-emptive attack on another country,at least a lot of waste of resources in pre-paration for some humanitarian emergency that never seems to justufy The UN's existence because it never seems to happen on the scale to necessitate and justify it's expense, unless you happen to be one of those UN officials who is on the payroll forever.
Too much like an insurance company, nobody goes out to get into trouble, well, some do,but most don't,lotsa profit for the insurance company if not too much happens to the undersigned's property, but some destruction has to occur to justify it's existence at all.
Fear of loss is a by product of greed.

United against capitalism, democracy, freedom, pursuit of happiness, anything the US stands for as far as I can tell.
