With all the talk about the Type 45, the Arleigh Burke, and the new Norwegian frigate with a phased array. I wondered where the Russians were in all this, and a quick check revealed that they don't have anything more modern than an Udaloy II class commissioned in 1999.

Knowing that the Russians have designed some superb warships, do they have anything more advanced.

Win/RT, It’s my opinion the Russian’s can ill afford to make any serious effort in building a competitive WAR-time navy in Century 21. Russia would be much better off double tracking and triple tracking the Trans Siberian RR than to waste money (in short supply) on a “high seas” fleet. Their former German (Prussian) port on the Baltic, Kaliningrad, is itself “land locked.” You can’t get there from here. They must cross Belarus or Ukraine to get there. The Germans learned in War 1 and War 2 they could not leave the Baltic for the Atlantic without the British knowing. Minsk and Arch Angel may be open year around what with the on-set of global warming, but still, how far is it from those Arctic ports to Moscow, say? Vladivostok in the Far East is out of it, really. If the Russians loose Chetznya they will have no direct access to the Black Sea, which is always so easy to block at either Bosporus or the Dardanelles. Even that would get you only into the Mediterranean. Subject to the Suez or Gibraltar. No, Russia is the largest LAND power in Eurasia. Yes. But no sea power. Not now, not ever.
