There are many different ancient legends, and ancient texts, and even in geological formations around the globe that the Earth suffered a tremendous, an unimaginable, cataclysm which wiped out entire civilizations save a few surviving remnants which became the forefathers of our Celtic, Egyptian, Aryan, Oriental, etc races. These cataclysm were tremendous, some of the ancient legends describe how their were rocks as big as mountains flying through the air! Imagine that, its almost unbelievable, but this is probably what happened. These cataclysms destroyed and sank the ancient continents, and the civilizations that inhabited them, the most famous being Atlantis and Lemuria.

After these cataclysms, the surviving remnants either went to the inner Earth, or off world. But, a small clique decided to stay and try to reforge the great civilization they once had. But, having lost all their advanced technology and knowledge in the cataclsysm, they were left virtually defenseless against the elements, and it appeared that the surviving humans would not survive.

Then, the Annunaki came down, offered us technology and knowledge on the grounds that we worship them as gods, and give sacrifices to them, and such and such. They really did appear as gods before the "naked" survivors (naked meaning a state of intellectual, and spiritual nakedness, it has nothing to do with physical nakedness), furthermore the Annunaki decieved the remnants into believing that they, the Annunaki, were the creators of physicality (an absurd asumption). They guided the old civilizations of Egypt, Sumer, and most of the civilizations we are told existed at that time (there are many more we are not told about). They mated with the "daughters of men", their offspring took over positions of power on the globe (the Illuminati / Royal Bloodlines), and the rest is history.

Well, the "rest" may be "history," but the first part certainly isn't.

Why did it sink, well depending on where you place Atlantis it could be many reasons, the most probable being Volcanic eruptions or Earthquake events causing Tsunamis.
Hope this hasnt already been covered, Santorini and the destruction of the Minoan civilisation seems to be gathering more credence as maybe being the fabled Atlantis. Some evidence that the massive eruption buried a fort in Egypt and also caused a massive Tsunami.

Video: "Atlantis" Volcano Devastated Ancient Egypt?

April 4, 2007—Were ancient Egyptian cities leveled by the massive volcanic eruption that may have inspired the legend of Atlantis?

The new find seems to confirm accounts from ancient artwork and documents that recount the destruction of coastal cities in Egypt and Palestine during the 15th dynasty (1650-1550 B.C.), when foreigners known as the Hyksos ruled Egypt.

This link details a possible massive tsunami around 8000 yrs ago which would nearly tie into Plato's timeline?

A massive tsunami smashed Mediterranean shores some 8,000 years ago when a giant chunk of volcano fell into the sea, researchers say.
Waves up to 165 feet (50 meters) high swept the eastern Mediterranean, triggered by a landslide on Mount Etna on the island of Sicily, according to the new study

If your preferred location for Atlantis is the Azores then the volatile geography of the Mid Atlantic Ridge would also have endured many catastrophic events in its history.

The Azores is a lively place to be. There is a continuous chain of earthquakes and volcanic activity that has had a great effect on its inhabitants. Many of them have left the islands in horror after witnessing one of these catacylysmic events. But disasters are bound to happen when a volcanic environment is home for thousands of human beings.89

There have been 21 major volcanic eruptions in the past 550 years collectively occurring on the islands of Sao Miguel, Terceira, Pico, Sao Jorge, and Faial

There have been 18 major temblors on the islands in recorded history.99 One such quake took place in 1522 when the entire village of Villa Franca, on Sao Miguel island, having 5,000 residents, and being the center of government, was engulfed within sixty seconds by land mass thrown from a hill behind the village. It caused a tidal wave and other destruction in the adjascent islands. It took a year to dig the village out and to give Christian burials to its 5,000 victims.

The problem i have with the Glacial melt causing the destruction is the time Plato suggests it took "a day and a night". Not sure if Glacial melt would fit this time line though a catastrophic geological event could. my 2c.
