President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared a state of emergency Friday as she struggled against a reported coup plot and a possible repeat of the protests that ousted two of her predecessors.

The announcement came after the military said a general had been arrested in connection with a coup plot and as people defied a ban on rallying at a shrine of the 1986 revolt that ousted Ferdinand Marcos. Clashes erupted as police tried to disperse the protesters.

Just as her predecessors, it seems that the Phillipines president is in the middle of a country asking for change. An undiclosed amount of people have been arrested and are bieng interrogated.

Military spokesman state that they cannot completely close the book on this coup plot as there are others including generals of an elite special forces group who were involved.

The president is hoping that the protesting will not grow any worse.
