First time a democracy removes freedom of speech?

Topic started on 12-2-2006 @ 05:23 AM by Helix

"The Swedish government has moved to shut down the website of a far-right political party's newspaper over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad."

news.bbc.co.uk...

Well, so much for this so called democracy. It is truly embarassing to live in this country at the moment. Not even our social-democratic prime minister has mentioned anything about the cartoons. They are way to afraid to look unpopular and loose their power. It really is tragical and it makes you wonder who really votes for them.

Maybe it's time for us to loose our values to notice how much we will miss them.

Here is the website that was shut down, it is now hosted on another server.
www.sdkuriren.se...

This is their main page, the .se page has been taken down too.
www.sverigedemokraterna.net...

Yeah, but the thing is that lots of other newspapers in Europe has published the pictures and when one does it in Sweden it gets shut down. I belive that it is becaus the swedish politicians want to keep on looking good down in the middle east. Especially since we have poured loads of money there.

When the Bush administration sided with the Radical Islam on the rights to be angry to the cartoons, the moderate Islamic population got their mouth shut.

He added more fuel to the fire and made the protest now be OK.

Yes it sounds incredible, but the right thing to do was to side against the violence and keep the freedom of speech.

Now these Radical violence muslin wants through intimidation bring their religious views and imposed special favors to every country in the world to abide by their rules.

They are demanding now that not offensive materials are printed depicting them in any unfavored way or their prophet

Then again I may ask Why should we bend to their views and their religion?.

Where in the Koran said that Mohamed picture should not be depicted in paper?

If I am not mistaken the more Radical Islamic laws are the ones that are making this a law.

I am not of any religious denomination so I careless about any cartoons.

If we value our freedom of speech we should be against any special favors that these violence people are demanding.

Their Religion deserve not more respect or special favors than any other religion in the world.

Intimidation should not be allow and our President should know that.

But trying to kiss up to the Saudi Arabia interest and his mess in the middle east he stuck his foot in his mouth.

The shutting down of that website was wrong. If the government doesn't want people offended, tough. Nearly statement is going to offend someone. I guess we all have to stick to things like "Air is good for us." and other things that can't offend a single person.

It's time for people to realize that a free government will not shut down someone because they happen to say something that offends a group of people. Government refusal to censor a citizen does not mean they endorse their statement, only that they endorse that person's rights to say what they want.

This, to me, basically says it would rather keep extremist islamics happy rather than its own people. At the cost of its own people free speech! Its absolutely reduculous. How can the government allow such things to happen. Why do we cater so well for these minorities, when, the boot be on the other foot, they'd give the twos up and pop you with an AK-47.
