Baldwin II, the patriarch of Jerusalem accepted the vow of Hugues de Payens,

a knight from Champagne , and eight other knights to forever protect the

“Kingdome of Christendom”. They were given charitable lodgings in the city temple where they became the “pauvres chevaliers du temple”, or the “poor knights of the temple”. This was the beginning of the Templar Knights, an order of warrior monks.
