NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - The attacker hid his weapons in a hooded sweatshirt as he strode into a popular gay tavern known for its quiet atmosphere and trouble-free customers.

The young man flashed an apparently fake ID, the bartender said, and calmly ordered a drink, asking if he was at a gay bar. Told that he was, he attacked the patrons with a hatchet and handgun, sending three men to the hospital early Thursday, one with critical injuries.

Well... this is sick. So obviously, hate still exists in this country, even in a generation that is considered today to be the most racial and religously tolerant that has ever existed in this world.

that sort of extreme hate is just like Islamo-facism IMO. Can't we just tolerate without obliterating those who are different than us? I am not gay, but have no problems with those who are, and I have no problem with Muslims as long as they are peaceful....

Yes there is, just like there is in every country that currently exists. This generation in my opinion is only tolerant towards hate directed at the majority, other then that there's no real change.

I would say that by and large, American culture has been pretty accomodating to the advance of gay rights. There are thousands of gay bars throughout the nation that never have any problems of this sort at all. There are notable exceptions to this, but they are notable because they are so few and far between. Even those who denounce homosexuality the loudest also denounce senseless violence. I think this was one troubled youth who really went off the deep end and it's a pretty lame excuse to start bad mouthing American culture.

Who's bad-mouthing American culture? The member who posted this thread didn't generalize Americans at all, he simply stated hate still exists in America (which is an understatement).

Gay bashing is a hate crime and since this was premeditated, and not an act of passion, they should really throw the book at this moron.

Sounds like another homophobic redneck strikes again. He was probably a closet case so afraid that people would find out he was gay that he thought well maybe if I kill a few no one will think I am. Well guess what hes about to be getting human booster shots from a guy named molly hope hes happy when he rots in hell!!!!

Probably just watched Brokeback mountain and couldnt handle what it did to him...

Gay bars will always suffer occasionally from such mornonity, but for the most part toleration is the rule.

How can gay bashing ever be a crime of passion?

I guess if the person who was doing the bashing has mixed up feeling about themself.

New Bedford Mass isn't known for its rednecks. This part of the country is usually pretty tolerant. My thinking is it was probably similar to the end of American Beauty. This guy was probably gay and couldn't stand it. The most ironic thing is that if this guy gets caught he's gonna spend a lot of time showering with big buff men.

I disagree that he might have been gay, I don’t know where people get this from, just because you may not like gays doesn't automatically make you gay yourself.

It can happen remember that guy on the Jenny Jones show that when on to find out about his secret admirer and it turned out to be a gay guy. A few days later he killed the gay guy.

I would say that is a crime of passion. Passion itself is any powerful emotion, love, joy, but also hatred, or anger.

The attacker is a violent criminal and needs to be treated as such. To me, it really doesn't matter whether he did it because it was a gay bar or not. He attacked and hurt several people and I hope they throw the biggest book they have at him.

It's obvious what the poster means. Isn't it? Please don't encourage him/her.

I can help.

Anti-gay violence is many times the result of Internalized Homophobia, which is a feeling of hatred toward homosexuals based on a fear and hatred of one's own homosexuality. The numbers of homophobics who are gay is said to be up to 80%.

University of Manitoba

Internalized homophobia can be defined as the fear, hatred, or dislike of people believed to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered by individuals that are a member of one of those groups. Internalized homophobia often results from an awareness of the oppression, discrimination and harassment that is experienced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered or two-spirited individuals by society. This awareness creates a fear of being identified as a member of one of these oppressed groups and can often result in a sense of self-denial surrounding a person's real sexuality or can result in a sense of self-hatred. Sometimes, in an effort to pass as "straight" or "normal", or as an act of self-hatred, internalized homophobia can be expressed verbally through insults, physically through violence or harassment or through individual acts of discrimination.

Most homophobes are gay

These findings support the theories that homophobia (fear and hatred of gayness and support for antigay discrimination) is often indicative of repressed, self-loathing homosexual feelings; and that many homophobes subconsciously use anti-gay attitudes as a smokescreen to disguise their own homosexuality.

Pornography studies show hating gays is hypocritical

Google Search: Internalized Homophobia +violence

Of course, there are some people who just hate gay people. But when I think about it, it's really hard for me to come up with a reason for this... I can understand people thinking it's 'wrong' for religious reasons (or using that as their excuse, anyway) but when someone goes into a gay bar and acts violently against another person, for no other reason than their sexual orientation, it begs the question... "Why"?

I don't think this guy will ever be back here to say what he meant because this guy obviously see's that no one is with him on this. But, it just goes to show you the mentality of some people in regaurds to people being different from the so-called norm. As to why some people here think the man may bave been homosexual himself and is angry about it. This seems to make the most amount of sense. Why would anyone really care if it had nothing to do with them? I'm not saying this was foreshore the case, but in the past it does fit the scene.

Just my thoughts...
put me in the insane cat...

And just how exactly do studies come up with this number?

I could understand if this could apply to other hate cases but it just doesn't. If someone hates blacks or Muslims, does that mean they are either black or a Muslim themselves?
