Is this really their patch??

That's an UNNOFICIAL patch that someone came up with. The 509th was the unit involved in Roswell. The OFFICIAL patch looks nothing like that. The offical unit insignia has a muchroom cloud, and is very honored and respected in the unit. They are the only squadron anywhere in the world that has a mucheoom cloud, as they were the unit that dropped the Atomic bombs on Japan.

Sometimes things like that patch come from inside the wing. Someone gets bored, and comes up with something like that, and makes a couple for friends, but someone at the store he made it at sees it, and makes a couple for their frieinds, and their friends see it, and think it's official, and it just runs out of control.

It is probably a play on the fact that their flights spawned the UFO era.

Someone in the 509th probably made it as a joke that they are the little grey men, flying around in their black triangles and such.

The patch commemorates the classified radar cross-section (RCS) testing of operational B-2 aircraft from the 509th Bomb Wing using the Dynamic Coherent Measurement System (DYCOMS) range at Groom Lake, Nevada. All U.S. stealth aircraft (F-117A, B-2, F-22, etc.) had their RCS verified using the DYCOMS. This is also done following modifications or application of new types of radar absorbent material (RAM).

The original version of the patch included the words CLASSIFIED FLIGHT TEST, but some high-ranking officer got upset about it. The second version was changed to read: TO SERVE MAN (from the eponymous "Twightlight Zone" episode.

The B-2 Combined Test Force at Edwards Air Force Base adopted the design for use on a T-shirt and replaced the motto with B-2 FLIGHT TEST. The back of the shirt had a cartoon of a gray alien emerging from an egg in the desert and pointing at the sky with the words "The Truth is out THERE!"
