White House staffers were ordered yesterday not to destroy any documents, telephone records or e-mails as the Federal Bureau of Investigation launched a full-scale criminal probe into the leaking of the name of a CIA operative -- an apparent politically motivated attempt to smear a leading critic of the war in Iraq.

A day late and dollar short by my account. I'm sure Mr. Rove purged all his records long ago. Why don't some hackers do something positive for a change and find a backdoor to Mr. Roves machine.

its not as simple as that. i can hack his machine but im sure its being watche i would also need his ip address. this is not easy to comeby.

tealk, hmm..i'd like to continue this type of talk in earnest but will side with caution. you're right an ip would be nearly impossible to get.

The thing I don't understand about this whole situation is that the media is demanding to know who leaked this and aside from the person that leaked it, they're the only ones who know. Hey media, save us some time and money and reveal your source if you want to know.

I thought that after Ken Starr, we had all had enough with independant investigators. Oh well, here we go again. Oh and the guy who broke the story wrote another piece about this and states the leak came from an outside source and that information about William's wife was pretty much out in the open anyway and thats why he included it. he didn't think it that big a secret as most of the press already knew it anyway. So why blow this up like that..tell us who told you and we have our leak. Simple as that.

AC are you sure that her identity was in the open like that?

I think Novak is trying to cover his arse. From what I gather, she wasn't an analyst like Novak says, but was actually a covert foreign operative, who'd been the field for something like 12 years.

No, kukla. I'm not sure and from what I read, neither is anyone else. I'm glad we haven't seen any staone-walling on this yet and that the administration has enacted an investigation. If someone truly outed her, it needs to be known but sadly it may never be because journalist have a right to conceal their sources however, I think Novak has said all that he can besides giving up said sources it just seems hypocritical to refuse to give up the source of the leak and then demand to know who leaked it. You may want to go to NPR's web site to get the transcript and the exact wording of Nina Totenberg's comments on the Morning Show, 6a.m. EDT segment, Thurs. 10/2/03.

She was discussing the limits on the Justice Dept. professionals, for instance that they can not on their own call a journalist before a Grand Jury.

She stated that at the request of the White House, the DOJ deferred for 24 hours the request that all documents, email, logs be held and preserved in the investigation of the Plame outing.

This is one more reason for a Special Counsel.

If it can ever be shown that documents or other material was destroyed in that period it may be the basis for a charge of obstruction of justice.

The person who made the request should be revealed to the public and the DOJ and Ashcroft made to explain why they complied with this request.
