Clinton backs Blair as UN chief, page

Tony Blair would make a "good" secretary general of the United Nations, former US president Bill Clinton has said.

Mr Clinton said he had discussed Mr Blair's future with him and told him there was "a lot of good you can do in the world" after leaving Number 10.

Mr Blair has said he would step down before the next general election, but has not revealed his future plans.

The current UN chief, Kofi Annan, ends his term on 31 December this year.

When asked on BBC2's Newsnight if Mr Blair should run for UN secretary general, Mr Clinton responded: "That would suit me. He would be a good one."

It wouldnt be a good idea to have a UN sec gen with such close ties to the US.
As head of the UN he would need to be seen as impartial, bit difficult when he went against UN wishes and invaded Iraq with George Bush.
He is too close to the US and has a track record of going against the wishes of the UN, cant see many Mid Eastern countries trusting him.

Last I heard is that no head of a country, or former head of a
country, can be UN Secretary General. I have not heard anything
that says this law has changed.

If that's still the case, then neither Clinton and Blair can be
in charge of the UN - no matter what ambitions they may have
to rule the world.

are seriously being considered at this time and a bit
of the process of election.

Blair and Clinton are NOT among them.

The link you supplied mentions the President of Poland as a contender, so that would seem to contradict the rule you cite.

But let me be the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about the election criteria.

It should be noted that as a rule, the UN Secretary Generals never come from one of the five countries that are permanent members of the Security Council. Hence, no one from France, Britain, the U.S., China or Russia.

You are right! UGH. I KNOW that I have heard that rule.
It has been discussed on TV news. No leader, or former leader,
of a country can be UN Secretary General.

I have googled and googled and I can't find it.

Someone ... PLEASE find it so we can all sleep peacefully tonight
knowing that Tony Blair and/or Bill Clinton can't be in charge of
the UN. HELP!!

BBC Newsnight’s Jeremy Paxman: “Maybe he should run against you for Secretary General of the UN?”

Clinton: “Well, that would suit me. He would be a good one.”

The remark was made in a moment of good humor as Clinton was asked what he would advise Blair to do in retirement. Both hail from P5 member states, traditionally barred from seeking the position. Clinton, himself once rumored to be interested in the post, would have a better chance of securing the top post, given Blair’s support for the Iraq war. But would it not be an interesting race?

This makes sense, since permanent members have veto power. It would give them too much say in the UN, imo. But since it's a tradition and not a rule, it would look like they are not officially barred from running.

That was probably it. Awwwww crap! 'Tradition'. That
means it isn't a rule that Clinton can't be head of the UN.
You know the egos of Clinton & Clinton (and Blair) will
push for themselves to be 'Head of the World'.
