Was there a mention of a parachute in any of the witness observations? Or do you think was that part of the malfunction?

Maybe it didn't need a parachute and fired some sort of retro rockets like the ones the spacex one uses to come back down

Possibly a foo fighter of some sort...but it would be more verifiable with a picture of the burnt out landing radius of the fireball, along with tripod landing mark indentations in the ground.
