"WASHINGTON - Senators on Thursday concluded their questioning of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito and the appeals court judge appeared headed
toward confirmation after fielding nearly 700 questions over 18 hours. "
“You’ve shown remarkable patience,” Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., told Alito as he concluded the questioning. Senators were
taking a lunch break before starting several hours of testimony by witnesses supportive and critical of Alito."
"Many Democrats — believing Alito would steer the nation’s highest court to the right on abortion, civil rights and other issues — have not
ruled out the possibility of blocking the nomination with a filibuster, which would require supporters to post 60 votes in the 100-member chamber."
