The Taliban came to power off the back of decades of chaos, and I *believe* they were initially popular because they 'restored order'.

I don't suppose we can whine in the West about arab regimes being undemocratic, only to say that we don't like the fact that the oppressed masses vote for the 'fundie' candidates, who seem to run a lot of independent social welfare programs that the state doesn't.

I personally think that the Muslim Brotherhood having 20% of the seats in the Egyptian parliament is more healthy than Mubarak getting 96% of the vote elections!
