Mr McCain said the United States was "very appreciative" of New Zealand's military involvement in Afghanistan and the efforts of the military reconstruction team that were helping the Afghan people build a new life.

But I'm confident both governments are very committed to the proposition and that we can work it out."

He said the US free trade agreement with Australia was the model that was being pursued.

I wonder if McCain will put words into action. Given that the backbone of the NZ econmy is dairy farming you have to wonder if the NZ government will ever get a "geniune" free trade deal with the US. Heres hoping the NZ government isnt dumb enough to sign an agreement in the future that floods NZ with the likes of dairy products with little gained in return.
