Ok you left wing tree huggers on ATS, explain this one.

If North America was covered in forest from coast to coast global temps would rise on average 3 degrees due to trees.

This just goes to show that the Global Warming scare is all propaganda and unfounded !

Study: Temperate Forests Could Worsen Global Warming

STANFORD, CA - Growing a forest might sound like a good idea to combat global warming, since trees draw carbon dioxide from the air and release cool water from their leaves. But they also absorb sunlight, warming the air in the process. According to a new study from the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, planting forests at certain latitudes could make the Earth warmer. Carnegie’s Ken Caldeira will present the work at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in San Francisco on December 7, 2005.

This is why there are deserts and grass lands as well, they keep things in balance. What is happening the past couple of hundred years is destruction/burning of forests and carbonhydrates. This obviously disturbes the balance in nature.

The article doesn't say what would happen if you cut down all the trees, that would most likely also cause a 3 degree increase in temperature, and other, more devestating natural disasters. Remember the dried up Amazone river, a couple of months ago. That's what happens if you mess with the balance in nature.

Also, the article sais the tropical forrests, the ones we're getting rid off at an ever increasing rate, actually DO cool the Earth. Only Northern forrests cause an increase in temperatures!

I'm not a tree hugger, I believe the current global warming trend is mostly due to a natural cycle. But I think mankinds influence in global weather will be noticable from this centrury on, if we continue the destruction of rain forrests, and don't fix the hole in the ozone layer.

It is always nice to have a thread start on such a pleasant tone...

For the most part, Zion Mainframe's comments are dead on. Moreover, global climate change appears to be an indisputable fact... the only issue that remains is the degree to which human activity contributes to that change. That is still an open question.

Regardless, it would be foolish not to recognize the elephant standing in the middle of the room and explore potential ways to deal with it.

How the hell does this prove the "global warming scare" is unfounded? If anything it shows that a lack of balance on the planet's surface can cause massive global atmospheric changes. If an excess of trees can alter the temperature surely massive emissions by humans over a couple centuries can too, right?

Global warming is an indisputable fact. Only someone with their head in the hole deeper than the grand canyon would deny it.

The issue is just if or how much or what effect human activity has on it is the debate.

Im not fully convinced there is anything we can do about global warming. Scientists keep discovering startling evidence that during Earths billions of years of history, climate changes happened frequently and suddenly. In fact, the biggest mass extinction of life on earth took place almost half a billion years ago, where 90% of life on earth was wiped out....by what....possibly global warming and desertification.

However, calling people tree huggers is a sure way to get yourself filed in the dumb cretin category. Simply because people oppose destruction of forests does not make them irrational or silly. Its more than just global warming. Cutting down trees and forests contributes to soil erosion, mudslides, ect. Besides, the way we cut trees down is stupid and wasteful and illogical.
