John Howard, the current prime minister of Australia, is satisfied with our current security measures against terrorism.

"The more I look at the administrative arrangements that exist in this country in these areas, compared with those of the United States and the United Kingdom, I'm satisfied that the arrangement here is as good, if not superior, to those that operate in America," Mr Howard told reporters.

I have to admit this is a surprise. Aussies are so used to Howard copying Blair and Bush that I would have laid odds that we would have a Dept of homeland security within a year. IS this Howard's arrogance shining through or does Australia REALLY not need a department like this?

I'm afraid my recollection of ASIO and ASIS wouldn't be any great cause for complacency.

Really I think he is talking just about admin arrangements and not overbureaucratising them as has happened in the US, rather than the specific quality of the work of the agencies themselves.
