Bigest problem?
Human desire for money and power, and therefore lack of humanity...

I believe the earth will kill us. Something is stiring withen earth. That something may destroy the atmosphere that we live withen. A supervolcano or some deep fissure out deep in the oceans may destablize our oxygen atmosphere. We all will suffocate and die. Earth will become mars like or an water ice ball.

Our atmosphere is probably the most fragile part of our existance.

The end.

There are many threats such as letting threats grow either by not watching, not directing or backing into a corner.
Also big threats as not being able to protect yourself or making yourself a target.

The biggest threat is choice on how to deal with society: teaching, rule, ignore...
Are normal people ignoring
Are we teaching correctly
Are we being ruled

Choose not to ignore, not to be ruled and teach the Good path.
Ignore at our peril
Teach wrong to our shame
Be rules of your own choice

not the serve-others.

For an answer from someone who has actually studied the subject rather than mere conjecture, read the latest issue of the Global Risks Report from the World Economic Forum. WEF Global Risks 2014.

In summary one of the major risks today range from Financial Crisis, water crisis, climate change, unemployment, extreme weather, income disparity and cyber attacks. In short, all cheery stuff.

However if you wish to look at the like of Gerald Celente for example. We are heading for another financial meltdown and global war. However he has been saying this since at least 2008. Having said that, the Argentine Peso is currently falling off a cliff, and the US markets are showing signs that things are starting to go wrong again, so it might not be all that far off.

Close your eyes and thing of kittens

This thread was started almost 8 years ago. It'll be interesting to see how peoples opinions on this have changed (if at all). The biggest threat to the Earth is humanity. The biggest threat to humanity is humanity. IMHO.

The Water Crisis

Water could be an issue for the future ... strange isn't bearing in mind around 70% of the Earth's surface is covered in the stuff.

Only around 2% of the water on Earth is fresh and 70% of that is unavailable as it is in ice-caps and glaciers.

Out of all the water on Earth less than 1% is actually available for human consumption once you take away water that is not accessible (remote areas, deep springs, glaciers, etc).

It is already common knowledge that there are nations across the globe without access to safe drinking water. Sources put this at over 750 million people worldwide without access to safe water. Add to that that 2.5 billion people (one in every third person) so not have access to safe sanitation. 700,000 children die every year due to unsafe drinking water.

Demand for water has tripled over the past 50 years. Every day more than 30,000 children die before their fifth birthday from hunger or through preventable disease, with drought a major aggravating factor.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says that in the next 20 years almost 50% of the world’s population will be living in areas of 'high water stress'.

Ten countries across the world control 60% of Earth's freshwater supply. These are (in order): Brazil; Russia; Canada; USA; Indonesia; China; Colombia; Peru; India; and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In China (contested) it is Tibet that owns a great deal of the available freshwater. Almost 50% of the world's population depend on the flow of freshwater from Tibet. Is it any surprise that China is pushing so hard for control? Giant waterfalls, a thousand lakes, huge glaciers; Tibet has more freshwater than anywhere outside of Greenland and Antarctica.

As the population grows and our resources become more scarce water control and export is going to become a powerful tool. Demand will increase whilst supply stays roughly the same. According to the UN, around 30 nations will be in 'water scarcity' in the next ten years. Eighteen of them are in the Middle East and North Africa, including Egypt, Israel, Somalia, Libya and Yemen. Eighteen countries, many of which are already at war (civil or terrorist related) and adding water scarcity to that could heighten tensions much further.

Could water become the next oil? Currently the West depends on the Middle East for oil (despite Canada having one of the largest reserves) but it could it be flipped on its head where the Middle East then becomes solely reliant on the West to survive?

All the best,

The biggest threat to humanity is immaturity, not respecting other people's way of life and trying to control everyone to be like them.

Fukushima + all the accumulated and ongoing accumulation of pollution in our seas - the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, cruise ship dumping, illegal waste dumping, etc.

And it can't get better, because humanity continues to ignore the problem and in fact the growing population only continues to contribute more and more to the problem...

Read the "Yahoo" link in this thread: The Ocean is Broken

It will give you a basic idea…The oceans are the most important component to the ecosystem which allows for life on Earth. If the oceans go, the world goes...

2...massive die off of sea life
3...climate change that destroys farmable land
4...the artic circle and above warms up to the point of permafrost melt, and releases tens of millions of squares miles of trapped methane

Apathy.
The attitude most us have towards world events in general. As long as it appears as if someone is taking action(?) against the problems facing us, we just sit back, go about our business and don't give a sh*t about things outside of our collective little worlds.
