I could understand how a powerful weapon might be used to ensure peace, but in the end, it's still a weapon, and will ultimately be used for war

Not necessarily.

What country is going to invade the U.S.? Russia? China? or any other country with nuclear weapons?

None.

Why?

Because as soon as the country that has those weapons gets down to the point where they are going to lose, the gloves come off and boom goes the world. So in effect a country with nuclear weapons has a huge deterrent from conventional warfare.

Why has it been 60 years since there has been a large scale war?

Because all the major players have nukes.

You are correct nukes equal fear, but I don't think it will equal annihilation.

Ok so all hell breaks lose. You wake up in the morining with the sunrise to the east and another sun to the west seeing ICBM's going over your head. what would you do?

Go too war? Fight in the name of your country? Fight because your president told you too? In the name of god? I don't know about you guys but I would go live up north, where I can avoid human's because humans are your worst enemy. We all have seen that day.

Thats a rhetorical question, right?
If what you describe is happening the only thing you would have time to do is kiss your rearend goodbye, and you probably wouldn't even have time to do that.
