Tsunami: Mangroves 'saved lives'

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) compared the death toll from two villages in Sri Lanka that were hit by the devastating giant waves.

Two people died in the settlement with dense mangrove and scrub forest, while up to 6,000 people died in the village without similar vegetation.

I know this is not a reliable way of making sure that noone ever dies again from a tsnumani in that area. However, considering two people died in the settlement with the dense mangrove forest and 6,000 people who died in the settlement who didn't have this kind of forest.

It's good though that the IUCN have found something that just may help that area in the future. Now, they wouldn't want to plant them everywhere just in strategic places so that more people could get out in time. Or it could give some people time enough to grab a hold of one of those branches and hang on for dear life.
