There was a big shootout in Toronto, near a shopping mall, that killed one woman and wounded six other people.

Crowds of Boxing Day shoppers fled for their lives -- some still wearing the clothing they were trying on -- after gunmen fought it out in the holiday air on a Yonge Street still aglitter with Christmas lighting just north of the Eaton Centre last night.

Before the gunsmoke could drift away, carnage littered the popular downtown shopping street.

Seven people were struck, one of them a 19-year-old woman killed almost instantly after a bullet shattered her face.

Toronto seems to be having a surge of gun violence recently.

They were able to catch two suspects shortly after it happened so that's good news.
Hopefully they'll be able to cut down on it before it gets out of hand.

There has been quite the sudden wave of gun crime in Toronto. And it comes at a perfect time when the Liberal party wants to ban handguns.

Gives them plenty of "ammunition" to use.

They're now loooking at a DVD as a pssible source of the gang violence in that are.

Toronto Police are wondering if a rap DVD might have been part of what caused Monday's shooting rampage.

The DVD, titled "Premiere Edition Pt. 2", features young men waving silver pistols and making chilling boasts about lethal reprisals and street supremacy.

A report in the Toronto Star quotes police as saying two segments on the disc may have sparked a gang war that played out for months on the city's streets this past year.

That might be a bit of a stretch.

I think everywhere is having a surge in gun violence. We had a shooting a few miles from my house at a pub.

Absolutely awful, especially when its a case of wrong place at the wrong time.

It gets to the point where u dont feel safe anywhere.

One of the suspects in the Boxing day shooting incident was fresh out of jail after committing armed robbery and had quite a few previous charges and
convictions against him.

On Oct. 6, Andre Thompson, 20, pleaded guilty to the armed robbery of a North York convenience store and was sentenced to two 30-day jail terms to be served concurrently.

He was sent to Maplehurst Detention Centre in Milton on Nov. 4 and would have been released on Dec. 3.

Had the judge ordered that he serve the sentences for each conviction one after the other, Mr. Thompson would not have been released until a week after the Dec. 26 shooting, in which gunfire was sprayed across a busy crowd of Yonge Street shoppers.

Only 60 days for armed robbery when the guy is a repeat offender is really lax.
Canada needs to tighten up it's laws and start sending people away for longer periods of time.

T.O. police charge 8 in Creba shooting death

Nearly six months of investigation resulted in second-degree and manslaughter charges against several people for the Boxing Day shooting death of 15-year-old Jane Creba.

The accused were arrested in pre-dawn police raids conducted at 14 locations throughout Toronto on Tuesday, netting 25 suspects.

Three people charged with second-degree murder are also facing six counts each of attempted murder in relation to six others wounded by gunfire.

Four men and one teenager face manslaughter charges in the Yonge Street gun battle between alleged members of two street gangs.
